Contract Controls Embedded Engineer – Solar Power Systems

Summary

Experienced Contract Controls Engineer responsible for integrating advanced subsystems into utility-scale solar power control systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background managing the integration of generators, inverters, batteries, solar panels, embedded hardware/software, networking, and power controller products.

Key Responsibilities:

System Integration:

  • Manage the integration of solar power subsystems including generators, inverters, battery storage systems, solar panels, embedded controllers, networking components, and power controllers from vendors like Vertiv, Eltek, and Victron
  • Configure and test Linux-based embedded hardware, Zephyr RTOS microcontrollers, networking equipment, and monitoring software
  • Develop integration plans, test procedures, and commissioning processes for each subsystem
  • Identify and resolve interoperability issues between different components and systems
  • Support system startup, validation testing, and performance optimization

Controls Programming:

  • Program power control algorithms, SCADA interfaces, and operational logic
  • Integrate new equipment into existing monitoring and control systems
  • Implement data collection, reporting, and analytical tools

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Develop and maintain system documentation, operational procedures, and as-built drawings
  • Generate progress reports and present updates to project stakeholders
  • Assist in commissioning and control system turnover to clients

Communication Protocols:

  • Integrate control devices using fieldbus technologies like RS485, Modbus RTU/TCP, and CAN bus

  • Familiarity with SAE standard J1939

  • Implement wired and wireless networking using Ethernet, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, NFC, etc.

  • Accustomed to working with Digital Oscilloscope wire protocol troubleshooting

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, or Solar/Renewable Energy Engineering
  • 5+ years experience with control system integration for solar/renewable energy plants
  • Hands-on expertise with generators, inverters, batteries, solar array technology, embedded systems
  • Proficiency in Rust, C/C++, Python, Linux, networking protocols, and industrial communications
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
