We are currently hiring a Principal Design Engineer to help support our WWM Engineering business. This individual will oversee the design, development, implementation, and analysis of highly complex technical products, processes, and systems. This resource must have broad knowledge of engineering procedures, as they will lead the resolution of complex problems. You will need developed specialized knowledge and be recognized as an experienced engineer in one or more technical competencies and has achieved or is approaching the level of subject matter expert in one or more technical areas. The ideal candidate will have very sound knowledge and understanding of the products in the portfolio, industrial application and importance to our business. Responsibilities typically include setting day-to-day operational objectives for individuals or small teams. Mentors, guides and train less experienced engineers and provides leadership by example to ensure policies, practices and procedures are understood and followed by less experienced engineers. This individual will contribute to solutions to the complex aspects of a project or process. Work is generally independent and collaborative, and of a highly complex nature requiring extensive technical experience and capabilities. Is able to effectively communicate, understand and drive cost efficient, highly quality technical solutions with cognizance to project budgets. Communicates clearly with customers to understand their needs and help the customers understand their problems, explain methodology, and proactively identify improvements the customer has not requested.

Responsible for development of custom field welding and machining tooling systems. Systems will be designed as “clean sheet” or involve modifying of existing “off-the-shelf” welding and machining components. Routinely interface with Field Operations, incumbent design engineers & fabrication to rapidly troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues along with documenting solutions to ensure configuration control. Apply experience and engineering judgment to quickly resolve problems in a dynamic environment. Travel to nuclear power plants and obtaining unescorted access may be required (10-15%). This position is based out of our Manning, SC facility but can be performed remotely from anywhere within the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare 3D models of tooling designs and systems using Autodesk Inventor, including detailed drawings.
  • Perform calculations to determine validity of design (strength of materials, mechanics, machine design).
  • Tooling system qualification and proof of concept testing as required.
  • Ensure the manufacturing, testing, and service operations are receiving timely technical support as needed.
  • Support Manufacturing operations with disposition of technical issues which occur during manufacturing.
  • Support Assembly operations with system assembly and bench tests.
  • Conduct qualification testing and prepare data.
  • Trouble-shoot operations and equipment assembly.
  • Support field deployment of self-designed systems and/or legacy systems.

Who You Are:

  • B.S. Mechanical Engineering from accredited university or equivalent (required).
  • M.S. Degree in Engineering discipline or M.B.A Degree (preferred, not required).
  • 10 years’ experience in mechanical design required.
  • Understanding and application of part tolerancing for assembly and use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Proficiency with standard Office products (word, excel, etc.) is required.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Vault or equivalent software.
  • Experience with FEA software such as Ansys or equivalent.
  • Nine to twelve months required to learn job scope.
  • P.E. licensure (preferred, not required).
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) or other equivalent process streamlining accreditation (preferred, not required).
