Job Summary:

The WCIC (https://cropinnovation.cals.wisc.edu/) is a World-Class plant research lab that is part of the UW, tucked away in the neighboring town of Middleton. The WCIC takes pride in helping academic, private, and philanthropic groups conduct plant research in several crops. The Center generates research material for graduate students, proof of concept material for start-ups, and produces plant material for food security gains in impoverished nations.

The incumbent will conduct genetic and biotechnology research on hemp. The projects will involve work on hemp to be used for production of biochemicals useful to humans, hemp used for fiber, and hemp used for grain. Quality and productivity traits will be included in the targets of interest. The incumbent will become versed in literature on hemp genetics, will conduct genomic, genetic, and genetic engineering (transformation and editing) research, and will evaluate derived plants and progenies for useful traits. The incumbent will plan projects together with supervisor and will carry out research and analyze results with substantial independence. Participation in report preparation and grant-writing is expected.

Responsibilities:

Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.

  • 20% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 50% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • 10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 10% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 10% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding

Education:

Required
PhD in plant breeding, genetics, botany or a closely related field

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
A combined total of 2 years of professional employment experience (beyond receipt of a PhD) working in all of the following areas:
-Plant genetics – Demonstrated evidence of plant genetics research
-Crop biotechnology – Demonstrated skill with gene-editing
-Plant tissue culture and transformation – Evidence of conducting plant and tissue culture transformation

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience conducting research with hemp such as: genetic engineering, crop production, and/or breeding

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $60,000 – $70,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.
