Job Summary:

This position functions under close progressing to limited supervision of the Soils Laboratory Manager. Primary responsibilities include performing analytical procedures, preparing samples for testing, quality control monitoring, and method development. The employee will collaborate with the lab manager and other lab staff to determine testing priorities, and contribute to the efficient operation of the Soils Lab including training and working with undergraduate student workers.

This position will conduct analysis including digestions and extractions on soil, plant, manure and limestone samples to determine nutrient content. Exposure to either combustion analysis of CN or other elements and or flow analysis equipment is required. Experience with ICP-OES analysis, forage or pH testing is preferred. Seasonal workflow may require hours beyond standard working hours in the spring and fall, not to exceed 50 hours per week.

The employee in this position will use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisor, coworkers, and all customers. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use data collection tools as appropriate. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

Education:

Required
Bachelor’s Degree in a science related field (e.g. environmental sciences, chemistry, etc.).

Experience with forage analysis desired

Qualifications:

Chemist II: Three years of experience in an agricultural or environmental lab with experience running automated instrumentation is required for this position.

Chemist III: Five or more years of experience in an agricultural or environmental lab with experience running automated instrumentation are required for this position.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Work hours: 7:45 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday

Salary:

Minimum $57,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
