Job Summary:

This position will work with a team of chemists in the laboratory of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP), as part of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), to provide robust precipitation and air chemistry data to a diverse group of scientists and entities across the nation.

The successful candidate will perform routine analysis on thousands of precipitation and passive air samples per year with minimal supervision. Work in the laboratory involves the operation and maintenance of Flow Injection Analyzers (FIA), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), Ion Chromatography (IC), and Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy (CVAFS) instrumentation. Personal initiative, independence, strong technical skills, and collaboration are essential in this role.

With emerging atmospheric pollutants on the rise, there is great interest from the scientific community to quantify these pollutants in order to better understand their impacts on the environment and human health. In this position the candidate will have the opportunity to work on research projects as is needed and as time allows. Collaboration with NADP stakeholders is key during research projects and both oral and written presentations will be required.

Responsibilities:

Performs testing, manages testing services, and reports results for chemical constituents in specimens and samples collected from humans, plants, animals, or other environmental matrices.

  • 60% Prepares, develops, and conducts chemical research experiments analysis of specimens employing quality control and quality assurance practices
  • 15% Utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems to meet unit objects in alignment with strategic initiatives
  • 10% Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data
  • 5% Participates in educational and outreach activities for various individuals and groups
  • 5% Utilizes assigned analytical methods-based quality requirements to verify test result validity and/or meet regulatory compliance
  • 5% Verifies test result validity and/or completes regulatory compliance activities

Education:

Required
Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Chemistry or related field (e.g. Environmental Sciences, Biochemistry, etc.)

Qualifications:

Required
1-3 years working in an environmental laboratory setting.

Preferred
3+ years of analytical laboratory experience.
Experience with FIA, ICP-OES, IC, and CVAFS instrumentation.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Actual salary is to be determined upon hire and dependent on qualifications.
