Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Trades Supervisor, the Carpenter position duties include but are not limited to: maintenance, repair, installation and alteration of walls, doors, flooring and wall finishes, including all aspects of rough and finish carpentry within our Facilities Operation.

Work with a team of professionals focused on excellent customer service. Base hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 5:30pm.

Responsibilities:

Constructs, erects, installs, or repairs structures and fixtures made of wood and all other substitute materials including partitions, joists, studding, and rafters; wood stairways, window and doorframes, floor coverings, and acoustical ceilings to ensure adequate, safe and operable institutional facilities.

  • 5% Interprets blueprints and drawings to determine specifications and to calculate the materials and equipment required. Discusses project plan with customer/client
  • 10% Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs
  • 65% Performs skilled carpentry work according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes
  • 5% Reviews finished projects with client/customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations
  • 5% Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations
  • 10% Coordinates, collaborates with, and oversees the work of vendors, outside contractors, and physical plant staff

Tasks:

  • Drive vehicles to efficiently transport staff, move supplies, and urgently respond to emergency situations.
  • Provides support and assists as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency.
  • Completes work in occupied or vacant University Housing spaces.
  • Creates, promotes, and participates in a collaborative team environment.
  • Utilizes and incorporates commercial construction techniques and materials to complete University Housing projects.

Qualifications:

Required: Completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Carpenter, as defined on DWD website – https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/occupations/carpenter.htm

Preferred: Five plus years of carpentry experience, repair/remodeling experience in residential or multi-family dwellings, and prior experience working within a University setting

License/Certification:

Drivers License – Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Work Schedule:

Flexible start time: primary schedule is Monday – Friday with hours between 8:00am and 5:30pm. Schedule will be determined upon hire.

Schedule alterations as operations and position expectations demand.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

This has been identified as a Crafts Worker position. Crafts Workers may elect an increased vacation allocation with a corresponding reduction to the prevailing rate.

Vacation elections with corresponding prevailing rates below:
100 hours = $43.55 hourly
140 hours = $42.85 hourly
180 hours = $42.20 hourly
