Job Summary:

Join our innovative act! team (academic technology & teaching !nnovation) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing (SoN). We are a small, dynamic group dedicated to empowering SoN faculty and teaching assistants to enhance nursing education through the thoughtful and deliberate use of cutting-edge technologies (such as active learning classrooms, multimedia content, and emerging uses of AI) combined with evidence-based teaching strategies. As an act! Advanced Specialist, you will collaborate with colleagues on impactful projects that enhance teaching and learning across all SoN degree and certificate programs, contributing to student engagement, retention, and success.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and participate in initiatives that identify, pilot, and implement innovative, technology-enhanced instructional strategies. Your work will directly support faculty, course leads, and program directors in creating engaging, effective learning experiences for nursing students across face-to-face, blended, and online environments.

Responsibilities:

Designs, develops, and enhances instructional activities, programs, and curricula. Applies learning theory and instructional design models in the consultation, selection, and application of educational methodologies and technologies.

  • 15% Designs and develops engaging, effective learning experiences which may be face-to-face, blended, and/or online
  • 15% Designs, develops, organizes, maintains, and consults on instructional materials, activities, curricula, and assessment resources in accordance with current pedagogical practices, cognitive/learning science, and design tools and methods
  • 10% Researches, designs, and/or acquires learning resources, technologies, materials, and/or processes to support learning
  • 10% Provides training and technical support directly to learners in settings such as classrooms, labs, clinics, and distance learning mediums
  • 10% Provides consultation, training, and/or support for learning technology tools and platforms
  • 5% Analyzes, tests, troubleshoots, resolves issues, and provides feedback regarding learning technologies
  • 5% Collects, organizes, interprets, and disseminates data to identify instructional program needs and enhance effectiveness
  • 5% Designs, develops, or recommends multimedia learning materials. Facilitates communications with multimedia service providers to ensure instructional needs are met
  • 10% Designs, develops, and delivers faculty development and engagement programs and activities
  • 5% Provides basic course support to ensure course readiness during critical periods of the semester (start and end, and faculty contract start), requiring full team focus and coordinated responsiveness.
  • 5% Participates in planning, reviewing, prioritizing, and evaluating projects to ensure equitable distribution of workloads.
  • 5% Contributes to sharing SoN accomplishments and teaching innovations at internal and external forums, as appropriate.

Tasks:

  • Design or update Canvas course templates based on faculty input, ensuring alignment with objectives and instructional best practices.
  • Guide faculty through the process of adapting program course templates in Canvas to their specific course needs.
  • Advise faculty on integrating unfamiliar and emerging technologies into courses, offering context-specific recommendations.
  • Conduct instructional technology workshops for faculty and TAs, addressing semester-specific needs and recurring support requests.
  • Guide faculty in multimedia development (e.g., video tutorials, podcasts) to enhance student engagement and success in SoN courses and programs.
  • Update faculty resources using current pedagogical research, ensuring materials align with current best practices.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide feedback on teaching strategies and instructional technology to improve student engagement and outcomes.
  • Analyze feedback from faculty and students on instructional technologies and course design, compiling reports for continuous improvement.
  • Lead presentations at SoN, university, or public events, showcasing successful projects and promoting faculty engagement in instructional innovation.
  • Assist in developing assessment tools, helping faculty design quizzes, exams, and rubrics in Canvas that align with learning objectives.
  • Collaborate with act! team members to review project requests, ensuring timely completion, equitable workload, and adjusting priorities as needed.
  • Assist faculty with planning, logistics, and technology support for high-visibility student projects like the online DNP Capstone Project Symposium.

Education:

Preferred
Master’s Degree in education, instructional technology, student services, or a related field OR bachelor’s degree in any discipline with on-the-job experience in these areas.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with instructors to provide training and support in designing, developing, and evaluating engaging learning experiences in face-to-face, blended, and online courses and programs.
  • Proficiency in developing, designing, and managing courses in Canvas or a comparable Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Familiarity with current scholarship of teaching and learning and its practical implementation in teaching practice.
  • Excellent communication skills, including presentation, public speaking, meeting facilitation, and written communication, that foster a collegial, respectful, and inclusive work environment for participants with diverse levels of technological expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both independent and collaborative team settings.
  • Ability to maneuver through a classroom with obstacles and obstructions (i.e. stepping over backpacks, moving from table to table to monitor activities during workshops or classroom observations, etc.) without accommodation.

Preferred:

  • Advanced knowledge of Canvas at a level of a departmental account administrator.
  • Familiarity with project management software (e.g., Basecamp, SmartSheet, or similar) and the ability to apply PM to plan, track, and evaluate the progress of complex projects.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position requires most work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. The person in this position may request and be considered for a formal remote work agreement based on guidelines set forth by the School of Nursing, and/or may be provided with remote work flexibility as needed and approved by the supervisor.

Salary:

Minimum $65,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The expected salary for this position starts at a rate of $65,000 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, the employee in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and other paid time off, competitive insurances and savings accounts, and employer sponsored retirement benefits.
