Salary range: The current salary range for this position is $78,200-$151,600 (9-month academic year salary), however, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The Rausser College of Natural Resources (University of California, Berkeley) seeks applicants for a tenure track (assistant professor) position in the area of “Climate Change Solutions,” spanning climate mitigation and/or adaptation. Expected start date is July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will be invited to join one of the following departments: Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE); the Energy and Resources Group (ERG); or Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM).

Human-induced climate change is transforming our physical and social world, and research that advances solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation is an urgent priority. We take a broad view of climate solutions, encompassing economics, policy, environmental justice, energy transition, ecosystem management, carbon sequestration and storage, and more. Applicants should explain how their current and future research will address the climate challenge. As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to identify the one department they would like to be considered by.

Successful applicants will be expected to develop an internationally recognized program and to develop research initiatives in climate solutions. We seek rising leaders from diverse fields and themes including, but not limited to, climate and environmental economics, climate policy, climate equity and environmental justice, environmental science, risk perception, ecosystem science, and nature-based solutions. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, potential for securing extramural funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to their home department’s teaching program. They will also have the opportunity to contribute to RCNR’s new Master of Climate Solutions program. We are particularly interested in scholars with a commitment to and track record of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the realms of research, teaching, and service. ARE seeks candidates conducting research on the economics of climate change, with an emphasis on efficient and equitable solutions to the climate crisis, including insights that can accelerate mitigation or adaptation. Examples include work showing how climate-related policies can be improved, how market design can foster decarbonization or adaptation, or how policy or market choices can alter the distribution of policy impacts or the burdens of climate change.

ERG seeks candidates conducting solutions-oriented climate change research, with a preferred emphasis in climate and environmental sciences, interests in interdisciplinary collaboration and scholarship, and pursuit of solutions that are socially just. For example, the candidate’s research might address climate and hydrological extremes at decision-relevant scales, restoration of socio-ecological systems, short-lived climate pollutants, global carbon-climate coupling, nature-based climate solutions, reductions in inequities in exposure to environmental harm, or just access to ecosystem services.

ESPM seeks candidates with research interests associated with climate solutions within the environmental, ecological, physical, social, and/or organismal sciences. Relevant expertise could include (but is not restricted to): nature-based climate solutions; sustainability transitions; governance solutions to address mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage; natural resources ecology and management; development and regulation of carbon markets; ecosystem function and biodiversity; social and ecological determinants of risk and resilience; and the interplay of local and global environmental systems, governance and knowledge.
