HSE Field Specialist
Vanguard Renewables is the premier anaerobic digester developer/owner/operator in the United States. Our closed-loop anaerobic digestion process converts organic waste and cow manure into green electricity or renewable natural gas as well as other related “value-added” products. Our head office is in Weston Massachusetts, and we are funded by institutional capital partners. We currently have over twenty projects in development operating in over thirteen States. We have a plan to continue to aggressively expand into other domestic markets.
The HSE Field Specialist is responsible for implementing Vanguard Renewables Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) policies at designated field locations, ensuring compliance with all relevant HSE regulations. They will coordinate with Corporate HSE, Construction, and Operations personnel to support VR’s objectives in maintaining safe operations for construction and operations.
Responsibilities
- Perform weekly field safety audits and work with teams to mitigate findings
- Perform behavior observations/documented/shared
- Site Safety Oversight on multiple locations as required to align with corporate HSE objectives
- Monitor equipment inspections and safe use
- Communicate to senior management potential problems, work interferences
- Assist with compliance surrounding hot work, confined space entry, fire system/ext. inspections, rigging inspections, tool inspections, equipment inspections, chemical storage etc
- Assist with incident response, notification, investigation, and reporting; may facilitate Root Cause Analysis (RCA) with company and contractor personnel to recognize HSE gaps to contractor leadership and work with management to develop plans to close those gaps
- Hand out task specific PPE as required for job tasks to include respirators and fit testing
- Coaching and encouraging employees on safe work practices
- Assist with First Aid supply monitoring, injury management and record keeping
- Assist with maintenance, asset tracking, bumping, and calibration of gas detection equipment.
- Foster mentor-relationships with the team to develop professionally as an individual contributor, while aligning with broader team OKRs and measures for success
- Control/cost out safety related purchasing of products, PPE, etc
- Lead by example and enforce company safety procedures/policies and compliance
- Encourage lean initiatives
- Support client high level site walks as required
- Engage in Job Safety Analysis and Permit to Work (PTW) to encourage better planning and outcomes
- Develop plans to help the company manage waste and recycling programs
- Assist and monitor sub-contractors and maintenance contractors during capital projects and maintenance work
- Support production, QA/QC, and Reliability considerations while keeping safety as the priority
- Assist with chemical inventory management and SDS binders
- Encourage Communication/engagement with other team members for problem solving
- Attend and engage in weekly production, safety, and operations meetings
- Assist with new employees, site orientations, onboarding, and visitor escorting
- Act as the liaison between clients, GC’s, contractors, employees and offer technical guidance as needed
- Conduct toolbox topics at required frequency. Document attendance ensure posted and reviewed
- Generate inspection documents and abatement reports.
- Monitor SWPPP NPDES Permit Compliance for Stormwater Discharges and Pollution when applicable, report deficiencies to Environmental Mgr
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, e.g., Occupational Health and Safety
- 3-5 years of experience in construction, oil, gas, or renewable energy
- Strong leadership and influencing skills
- Demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the HSE field
- High attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills
- Has the physical ability to perform site inspections including climbing ladders and walking on uneven terrain
- Holding an OSHA 30-Hr, FA/CPR/AED Cert to include HAZWOPER are advantageous
- Position requires up to 50% travel to remote operations
