Our Applied Science practice leverages a unique combination of technologies and expertise to engineer practical solutions to problems of national and international importance. We apply expertise in solid and fluid dynamics, materials science, acoustics, risk assessments, and computational simulation methods to solve complex problems. We perform research, mathematical modeling, software development, and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants, and automotive and airborne vehicles. Military, government, corporate, and academic clients value the validation of Applied Sciences software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.
The Role
We have a Senior Project Engineer opening with our Applied Science Practice with a focus on decarbonization technologies and pathways, contributing to Thornton Tomasetti’s broader
Climate Action

initiatives. This role is both technical and hands-on, requiring regular interaction with clients. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineers from various disciplines to develop holistic decarbonization frameworks for our clients. The primary responsibility is to evaluate decarbonization strategies by working with internal technical experts or conducting external research, always focusing on cutting-edge technology. Additionally, this role involves directly communicating complex technical topics to non-technical clients. The role includes managing both internal projects and existing client relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Regular communication with senior staff working on decarbonization technologies for campuses, power plants, and materials manufacturing (e.g., cement and steel), as well as cross-collaboration with other Thornton Tomasetti practices.
  • Lead and manage decarbonization planning projects, including microgrids, central heat and power (CHP) decarbonization, electrification, etc.
  • Evaluate and interpret research, technology data, and engineering studies on decarbonization technologies like micro-nuclear, carbon capture, hydrogen, and battery storage.
  • Coordinate with internal engineers and scientists to develop cohesive deliverables that meet client needs.
  • Clearly communicate the results of technical investigations and calculations to both technical and non-technical clients.
  • Document the design, development, and analysis process through drawings, reports, and presentations.
Requirements
  • 5+ years’ experience in engineering, architecture, or science, with a background in decarbonization and/or environmental sustainability.
  • Project management or engineering management experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Creative and conceptual thinking; ability to quickly learn new skills and apply them to solve first-of-a-kind problems.
