About the City of Mountain View

Located between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the San Francisco Bay, Mountain View is just over 12 square miles in the center of Silicon Valley (10 miles north of San Jose and 35 miles south of San Francisco). The City is home to many internationally known corporations and thriving small businesses. Through the Climate Corps program, Mountain View is interested in hosting 2 Specialists to support its expanding Sustainability program. The Sustainability Specialists will work in the Sustainability and Resiliency Division, located in the City Managers Office.

Position Overview & Description

This position will support community engagement and policy/program development related to climate resilience, decarbonization, and equity. This is a great opportunity for individuals with strong creative, analytical, and communication skills who want to work with passionate staff to make a real difference! This position will engage with our residents, businesses, and city employees from across the organization. The work format for this role is Hybrid with 3 remote days (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and 2 on-site days (Tuesday, Thursday) per week. This position will require occasional weekend and evening work for supporting community engagement events.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and implement decarbonization and climate resiliency community engagement campaigns targeted at residents, businesses, and city employees
  • Develop print and online outreach materials, including flyers, social media content, newsletters, and website content
  • Plan, organize, and host community and employee engagement events, including coordinating the Citys annual Earth and Arbor Day Celebration
  • Conduct research on various sustainability, climate resilience, and equity topics and communicate findings
  • Work with city staff to gather data, track metrics, and report on the Citys progress toward achieving its sustainability and resiliency goals
  • Support the development of the City’s 2035 Climate Strategy, which will include a vulnerability assessment and climate action and resiliency plan
  • Help prepare agendas, staff reports, memorandums, minutes, and other documents for Council and Council Sustainability Committee meetings
  • Support the development and implementation of building and transportation electrification policies and initiatives

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience designing and implementing community engagement campaigns, particularly for frontline and disadvantaged communities
  • Experience designing flyers and social media content in Canva
  • Experience planning and hosting large community events
  • Strong writing skills, particularly for outreach materials and formal reports
  • Research and data analysis skills, including use of Excel
  • Experience working with a variety of audiences, such as residents, businesses, and community based organizations
