About the Role: Steven Winter Associates is currently on the search for a mid-level Energy Engineer with professional mechanical and HVAC experience for our NYC office. The energy or mechanical engineer will be based within our Building Operations, Decarbonization & Efficiency (BODE) team. The ideal candidate for this mechanical engineering position will play a key role in bringing decarbonization and energy efficiency projects to completion, as well as implementing energy conservation measures to support our committment to sustainability and energy efficiency. This role is responsible for executing on our clients low-carbon goals by performing energy and feasibility analysis and implementation support for retrofit projects, under the technical guidance of a Senior Energy Engineer.

The proposed annual salary range for our energy engineer / mechanical engineer position is $70,000 to $95,000 based on a 40-hour work schedule. The final salary may vary depending on confirmed job-related skills and experience.

Energy Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform energy project work for commissioning, energy auditing, and retro-commissioning of new construction and existing buildings.
  • Complete technical project work including reviewing construction documents, submittals, and code requirements, developing testing plans, and inspecting installations.
  • Assume primary responsibility for executing small energy projects, including financials.
  • Lead communication with building owners, developers, architects, engineers, and contractors.
  • Work with internal stakeholders including project managers, energy modelers, and sustainability and accessibility consultants.
  • Assist with project proposals under guidance from Senior Engineers.
  • Train entry level staff members when applicable.

Energy Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering or related field.
  • 2 5+ years of relevant experience working with HVAC systems in large multi-family or commercial buildings.
  • Experience conducting field inspections related to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment (MEP).
  • Understand common HVAC systems and emerging high-performance alternatives.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and proficiency in other MS Office Programs.
  • Familiarity with energy efficiency practices and energy conservation measures.
  • Knowledge of energy codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, IECC).
  • Ability to perform energy audits and assessments.
  • Proficient in data analysis and technical reporting.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to type, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to climb stairs, use elevators and exterior construction hoists, and may be exposed to cold and hot interior and exterior temperatures for extended periods of time (when in the field).

TRAVEL REQUIRED: Occasional overnight travel may be required (Less than 10%). Frequent local field visits in the Metro area will be necessary (approximately 40-50%). A valid and clean driving license is required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: This is a hybrid position: we work with our employees to find a balance that works for the employee, the team and the firm depending on the job requirements. Most of the duties will be performed in an office/home office environment. The remainder of the duties will be performed in the field which will involve trips to projects sites for observation and training.
