Position Summary
Sparkfund is looking for an FP&A leader to own and lead the company’s financial planning and analysis. This person will collaborate closely with key internal and external stakeholders – including executives, business unit leaders, investors, and our Board of Directors – to gather and analyze the company’s financial data, provide strategic recommendations, and drive the company’s financial vision and strategy.
This person must be not only highly skilled with financial analysis, they must also be highly skilled at communicating their insights and analysis to a wide range of audiences effectively enough to influence and drive change. This person should also be driven and curious to learn the business from multiple angles, to engage senior leaders as collaborators, and to really own the performance and success of this function. The ideal candidate will also have some accounting experience.
This role can be Sr. Manager- or Director-level, based on experience. This person will sit on our Corporate Finance team and report directly to the head of the team.
Location
Sparkfund is a fully remote company with employees across the United States. This role is flexible on location, but some preference will be afforded to candidates located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. All candidates must be eligible to work in as well as reside within the continental US. This role requires minimal travel (no more than 10%), though there might be opportunities for travel. We do expect employees to travel to Denver and / or other US cities 2-3 times a year for organized team and / or company gatherings to collaborate with other members of the team / company, learn the ins and outs of our business, and contribute to our company culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the collection of information from across the company, collaborating closely with executives, BU leaders, and function leaders to clearly understand performance results.
- Analyze current and historical financial data and performance – identifying trends, generating scenario and variance analyses, and recommending solutions or strategies.
- Track and analyze current operating assumptions concerning capital expenditures, revenue, expenses, headcount, depreciation, balance sheet, and cash flow.
- Review long-term financial forecasts, contributing to the improvement of the financial models and other processes and tools to ensure optimal accuracy.
- Prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, translating the data and analyses effectively for technical and non-technical audiences, including executives and Board members.
- Evaluate short-term and long-term project revenue, collaborating with internal teams to build business cases.
- Assist in generating the quarterly and annual budget and forecasts.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting
- 4-7 years of experience in FP&A, financial analysis, or a similar function.
- Demonstrated analytical and financial modeling skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Deep understanding of US GAAP, financial statements, and how business decisions impact financial modeling, accounting, and reporting.
- Proficiency with NetSuite or similar financial planning suite
- Advanced spreadsheet experience using Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
- Experience organizing and collaborating remotely using software and cloud-based information management tools such Google Workspace, Slack, Salesforce, etc.
- Experience presenting to multiple levels of stakeholders, including team leaders, executives, and Board members.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to translate financial concepts and topics effectively for non-financial audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances, skilled at making sound and defensible decisions in the face of incomplete information.
- A growth mindset with a demonstrated drive to learn and to improve.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Advanced financial modeling skills.
- Past experience in an accounting role.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace, Slack, Salesforce, NetSuite.
- Experience in a startup environment or a fast-paced company.
- Experience analyzing and generating pro-forma financial statements for private equity-sponsored companies.
- Experience working with or within the construction, utilities, energy efficiency, renewable energy, resilience, or finance industries.
