Transmission Line Standards Engineer

Technical Shared Services, Transmission Line Design

This position will be located in Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA (Metro-Atlanta)

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta).
  • Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Transmission Line Standards Supervisor for Southern Company Services, Technical Shared Services (TSS), Transmission Line Design and will be located in Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for Transmission Line Design, Maintenance, and Construction, developing standard design criteria and processes for Southern Company.

The specific product(s) they will handle may include:

  • Arrestors
  • Insulators
  • Below grade structural foundations
  • Guys (anchors, grips, hardware, and wire)
  • Grounding
  • Underground transmission
  • Fiber optics
  • Line switches (motors and accessories)
  • Pole line hardware
  • Poles, towers, and arms

The assigned products will depend on the successful candidate’s experience. The role involves collaboration with Technical Shared Services (TSS) leadership, customers, and industry peers to ensure Southern Company design criteria meet or exceed industry standards. They will support Transmission Line Design, Transmission Maintenance Centers (TMCs), Operating Company Project Management, and Operating Company Construction. They will provide expertise in line design and assigned products for Power Delivery across all Southern Company affiliates.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • A minimum of three years of total combined experience in the following areas is strongly preferred:

+ Transmission Line Design, Maintenance, and/or Construction

+ Experience with product(s) used in the design, construction, and maintenance of transmission lines.

  • A professional engineering license, or the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering License within 2 years, is preferred.
  • Other, related industry certifications are preferred.
  • Experience using PLS-CADD strongly preferred
  • Some experience in contracts and contract administration is preferred.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the design and/or selection of assigned product(s) for transmission line projects.
  • Provide operating companies and regions with assistance evaluating special needs for assigned products.
  • Provide customer support for emergency repairs for assigned transmission line product(s).
  • Develop Southern Company standard designs for transmission line assigned product(s).
  • Perform construction inspections of transmission assets on an as needed basis.
  • Serve as a technical resource to design, operations, and maintenance groups to provide design consistency and problem resolution.
  • Use broadly solicited input for decision making.
  • Provide technical guidance for complex projects, assessing the impact of existing and future projects on the system, and take steps necessary to minimize any adverse impacts.
  • Serve on Southern Company and Industry committees/task forces, providing leadership and guidance to ensure that the best designs and practices are developed for Southern Company, i.e. Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) committees, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), PD System Performance Line Design Working Group, and Southern Company Transmission Line Maintenance Committee, etc.
  • Develop relationships and work with vendors to select, develop, and/or improve products for Southern Company. Manage the approved vendor list by monitoring vendor performance and quality.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficient using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Basic proficiency in using AutoCAD.
  • The ability to deal with people, develop, and build relationships at all levels
  • Proven effective interpersonal, communication, teamwork, organization, and presentation skills
  • Thorough knowledge of transmission line facility design and maintenance process and requirements, especially performance criteria for safe operations.
  • Thorough understanding of construction practices for transmission line facilities.
  • Proficient knowledge of codes and standards relevant to the design of transmission lines and structures, such as NESC C2.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues, and articulate complex issues simply
  • Ability to adapt to and work well with construction in the field under varying circumstances.
  • Demonstrated understanding of managing accountability and performance of self
  • Ability to coach and develop technical personnel
