IT (GIS) Supervisor
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the team providing support for the GAS Geographic Information System (GIS) functions for Southern Company Gas (GAS) used by GAS Distribution Operations for our state regulated Local Distribution Companies (LDC). This includes full software development lifecycle of end-to-end GIS technology planning, detailed GIS technology roadmap, GIS program and project delivery, and GIS technology production support and maintenance. Partnering closely with GAS Field Operations executive, and senior leadership, this position ensures the feasibility of strategic GIS investments along a multiyear roadmap to improve the GAS employee and GAS customer experience. This leader will ensure the GIS roadmap and technology portfolio align with the overall GAS Technology Delivery strategy, roadmap and goals including ensuring GAS GIS Technology is simplified and readily supported. This role is responsible for ensuring operational excellence through continuous metric driven improvement providing highly reliable and high-quality technology solutions and support through appropriate design and highly engaged customer service. This position collaborates across Technology Organization (TO) leadership to ensure effective delivery. The Supervisor, GAS GIS, is responsible for 9 IT (Information Technology) professionals, including the occasional contractor across various geographic locations. This position is responsible for managing a $1M – $5M annual technology budget with responsibility for a project portfolio of $10M $20M.
This leader will support the organization as they leverage current products for new solutions, influence consolidation and application rationalization. This position will deliver simplification of solutions to minimize customization and improve supportability. This includes defining and supporting investments that enable the achievement of business objectives and advance the companys capabilities to provide a competitive advantage. This position is responsible for promoting and supporting the realization of what is possible with technology. In close partnership with GAS Business Operations Technology Services (BOTS), this position supports GAS business partners on the Asset & Compliance Technology Advisory Committee.
This position will report to the Manager, GAS Asset Technology.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrate key leadership behaviors and evolve our culture to improve GAS and TO partnership, elevate value and grow talent.
- Ensure reliability and security of GAS GIS technology minimizing unplanned disruptions across GAS operations.
- Continuously improve quarter over quarter through data driven operational metrics.
- Formulate and drive the GAS GIS technology roadmap for the mutual benefit of GAS and TO.
- Applies leadership and strategic thinking to a diverse set of opportunities and challenges, serving as a true strategic partner and enabler of GAS operations.
- Grow field and asset business acumen to improve planning, requirements elicitation, solution fit, and maximize value.
- Grow technology expertise to solve problems, adapt existing technologies and standards, and innovate.
- Drives and simplicity of design to ensure highly available systems where needed and maintainability of the field technology platform and the integrated ecosystem it anchors.
- Designs technology solutions that are common where possible and custom where it counts.
- Ensure TO standards and policies are enforced and deviations are mitigated.
- Partner with the BOTS to ensure business strategies have feasible technology plans.
- Own SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle) life cycle: planning, requirements, design, develop, test, deploy, support.
- Collaborates with other TO leaders, including other technology leaders outside of GAS technology delivery, to ensure scalability and expertise of TO is successfully leveraged and solutions are common where possible and custom where it counts.
- Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships and partnerships with leadership throughout Southern Company Gas and industry peers.
- Leverages and influences key product vendors.
- Holds key professional services vendors accountable for quality, thoroughness, and results.
- Execute communication strategies, listening to GAS feedback and improving the technology experience for GAS employees.
- Drives innovation broadly and leverages technology to create value and transform GAS Field, Asset and Compliance.
- Creates budgets and manages financial performance of the delivery function.
- Hires, develops, rewards, and retains highly qualified and diverse technology leaders.
- Fosters accountability, communication, and engagement at all levels.
- Actively contributes to the success of peer GAS Technology Delivery functions, GAS Strategic Technology functions, and other TO functions to ensure overall effectiveness.
- Develop empowered leaders who proactively solve problems at speed leveraging TO scale and expertise to deliver supportable solutions that increase innovation, improve efficiency, and reduce cost.
- Expedite adoption of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and other modern technology tools to achieve value through automation.
- Retire legacy technology to make room for modern technologies that promote innovation.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
- A degree in Computer Science or a related field is required. An advanced degree is desirable.
Experience and Knowledge
- 10 or more years of experience in IT, with at least 5 years of experience managing multiple, medium-to-large- sized and cross-functional teams.
- Comprehensive knowledge of information technology with an extensive understanding of integration principles and practices, application development technologies and methodologies.
- Experience with ESRI products and their utilization in various Utility applications.
- Broad understanding of GIS and how it can be leveraged to provide information to the business to make informed decisions and track assets appropriately.
- Experience establishing and defining a comprehensive integration strategy and roadmap that meets the strategic and operational objectives of the business.
- Broad knowledge of the utility business functions and an understanding of how the Technology Organization adds value to these organizations.
- Building strong leadership teams and high performing organizations.
- Leading and operating in a fast paced, real-time operational environment with changing business dynamics.
- Experience with Waterfall and Agile delivery.
- Broad understanding of System Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
- Solid foundation in Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL).
