Position Overview

The Senior Director of Development (Sr. DOD) oversees all aspects of the project development process. They will manage Development Managers in their progress from early-stage site evaluation and site control, through complete development and handoff to construction. The Sr. DOD manages the planning, scheduling, managing scope and budget for vendors. As well as coordinating company resources such as legal, engineering, pre-construction and navigating interconnection studies, site design, EPC selection, and financing due diligence efforts for multiple projects simultaneously.

General Responsibilities

  • Assess and anticipate deliverable needs; manage budget, schedules, and scope of work documents; communicate resource requirements to executive management; participate in contract review and RFP review.
  • Manage project transitions and hand-offs from development to construction phases
  • Create and execute a development strategy encompassing land acquisition, permitting, interconnection, site evaluation and characterization, technology selection, power purchase agreements, financial modeling and environmental studies among other project milestones.
  • Hire, coach, and mentor a team of project developers to develop in multiple markets and technologies.
  • Create and implement project control tools, maps, data rooms, databases, and schedules.
  • Provide guidance on acquisitions of project, portfolios, and operating asset.
  • Liaise between development and technical teams on site selection, transmission/interconnection, procurement of storage equipment, software, and other provisions.
  • Develop and evaluate options to optimize cost and scheduling and “problem solve” as required to recover schedule
  • Primary interface with executive management on matters relating to development progress
  • Managing third-party financing due diligence reviews with finance and executive teams

Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, focus on energy/land management or relevant environmental/renewable energy coursework; master’s degree preferred
  • 10-15 years solar industry or electric utility generation project development experience including project management, jurisdictional permitting, conceptual and detailed design, scope writing, scheduling, cost estimating, procurement, and contracting
  • Expert level of proficiency in Microsoft office suite software, project management and scheduling software
  • Strong knowledge of business fundamentals, techniques of economic analysis, and a solid understanding of wholesale electricity markets, corporate renewable energy procurement and renewable energy development
  • Advanced written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills
