Summary:
The Systems Engineering team, part of the Projects department, plays a crucial role in Powin’s scalability and commitment to long-term customer success. This team of subject matter experts is responsible for defining system requirements and providing ongoing support to Sales, Sales Engineering, and Project Engineering. They offer expertise, training, mentoring, and in-depth analysis to meet project needs and streamline operations within the Projects Team. Working closely with various departments, the Systems Engineering team ensures that projects meet customer functionality and contract requirements, supporting the customer experience throughout the entire lifecycle.
The Battery Systems Safety Engineer serves as a key resource for the Sales, Bid Management, and Project Engineering teams, as well as customers, providing expertise on safety, fire safety systems (FSS), codes, and regulations, and supporting the development of fire safety designs and industry compliance on a global scale. This role also requires familiarity with the International Fire Code (IFC) and other relevant international standards, ensuring that Powin’s projects meet safety and regulatory requirements across different regions.
Job Details:
- Collaborate with Sales Engineering and Project Engineering teams to design and develop fire safety systems (FSS) solutions and specifications tailored to non-standard customer requirements, including fire panels, fire suppression equipment, other safety components.
- Partner with the Sales team, Bid Management team, and customers to review, validate and provide technical support for documents integral to customer contracts, ensuring clarity and compliance with local and international fire safety standards.
- Work closely with the project execution team to deliver comprehensive support and detailed technical documentation for compliance with standards such as 9540a, NFPA 69, and other relevant fire safety regulations.
- Support the compliance team in certification processes and actively represent Powin in NFPA-related activities, including attending conferences, participating in committees, and contributing to industry discussions.
- Develop and deliver safety documentation, white papers, and training programs for both internal and external customers, promoting a thorough understanding of fire safety protocols.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of safety documentation for products and projects, including Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs).
- Generate comprehensive reports and assessments that address code safety compliance, hazard analysis, risk mitigation strategies, and emergency response planning, ensuring adherence to industry standards.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management and Engineering teams to identify and address safety gaps in current or proposed energy storage solutions, specify requirements, and review and approve all safety-related documents to ensure full compliance with applicable fire safety codes and standards.
- Conduct ongoing research and training to continuously improve existing fire safety offerings, close knowledge gaps, and enhance team expertise, ensuring that Powin remains at the forefront of fire safety innovation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
- 5+ years of experience in the design, development, and implementation of fire safety systems, particularly in energy storage or similar industry.
- Extensive experience applying NFPA codes and standards, such as NFPA 69 and 9540a, as well as the International Fire Code (IFC) and other global fire protection regulations in engineering projects.
- Proven track record of coordinating with cross-functional teams, including Sales Engineering, Project Engineering, and Compliance, to develop fire safety solutions and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Hands-on experience with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs).
- Experience in preparing technical documentation, including hazard analysis, risk mitigation, and emergency response plans.
- Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) certification preferred.
- Experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally verbally and in writing.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to diverse audiences, including senior management, cross-functional teams, and customers.
- Attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability and willingness to manage work with multiple time zones and travel up to 20%.

Compensation for this position is commensurate with location, experience and relevant skills. The national Average Base Salary Range is $106,000 – $145,000. Positions may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus based on company and personal performance.
