Overview:
PNNL is seeking a Market Sector Director Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to provide strategic leadership to PNNLs $225M+ portfolio of research supporting the Department of Energys (DOE) renewable energy, transportation and energy efficiency programs.
The Market Sector Director will develop and execute PNNLs portfolio strategy with PNNL staff and strategic partners, including direct management of a team of senior advisors with expertise in relevant fields of technology and program development. The EERE Market Sector Director will manage a portfolio of PNNL RD&D projects spanning vehicle technologies and advanced batteries; advanced manufacturing; building technologies; water power; bioenergy; hydrogen; wind, solar, geothermal and grid-edge technologies. This high-profile and highly influential position will have the opportunity to bring PNNLs diverse capabilities to bear on our nations most important energy challenges. These include leading-edge capabilities in sustainable materials synthesis and renewable fuels development; next-generation battery chemistries; applied marine, hydrological and atmospheric sciences; and buildings, power and transportation systems engineering.
The Market Sector Director is a senior member of the PNNL management team and will represent PNNLs substantial research portfolio to high-level government sponsors, industry executives and other strategic collaborators.

Responsibilities:
The EERE Market Sector Directors primary responsibility is to ensure that PNNLs strategies and research are advancing the DOEs priorities to deliver a reliable, resilient, secure, affordable and sustainable U.S. energy system. The next Director will also continue to build strong industry partnerships to ensure PNNL research advances are deployed across consumers and industry. This position requires travel to meet sponsors, participate in conferences, and engage with a variety of stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that PNNL research efforts meet the expectations of DOEs Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and its sub-offices.
- Develop, implement, and communicate PNNLs cross-cutting RD&D strategies across relevant technologies and DOE mission areas, in collaboration with management and technical staff.
- Work collaboratively with PNNL technical leaders and line management to build distinctive and impactful research capabilities that support DOE missions.
- Build consensus and forge positive relationships across a diverse range of external stakeholders including, universities, vendors, OEMs, utilities, and other national laboratories.
- Provide direction and overall leadership for program development and the pursuit of EERE-related funding opportunities, to ensure strategic alignment with lab and sponsor priorities.
- Establish and manage an effective program development team that supports DOE sponsors while fostering a productive, communicative, and inclusive work environment.
- Manage a substantial program development budget and track execution of the $225M+ DOE-funded program portfolio to meet yearly expectations.
- Serve as a leader within the PNNL Energy and Environment Directorates senior management team, contributing to the organizations mission, vision and strategy.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA and 15 years of experience -OR-
- MS/MA or higher and 13 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters or Ph.D. in relevant field such as mechanical engineering, energy systems engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, energy policy or economics.
- Deep experience in field of specialty with a comprehensive understanding of relevant theories, principles, and concepts, and a broad understanding of trends and significant events related to the energy efficiency, renewable energy, and transportation sectors, techno-economics and energy system modeling challenges.
- Experience working in or closely with energy sector stakeholders (e.g. OEMs, energy project developers, electric utilities, regulatory entities, research organizations).
- Strong track record of working effectively with senior-level Department of Energy (DOE) program and technology offices with particular emphasis on the EERE Office.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with other national laboratories.
- Successful track record of capturing new business opportunities.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as a team member and contribute to an inclusive and collaborative organizational culture.
