Many of our projects are pushing the envelope of technology and financing in the renewable energy industry. Projects typically range from $300,000 to $10M, with occasional projects as large as $20M. Orbital Energy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Construction to oversee our construction projects for commercial solar in Illinois. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in solar engineering, lead design, and project management.

Job Summary:

The Senior Solar Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the engineering and technical aspects of solar energy projects from conception to completion. This role requires a combination of strong leadership, technical expertise, and project management skills to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality solar energy solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and engineering of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including system layout, electrical design, and performance analysis.
  • Oversee the development of detailed engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for solar projects.
  • Review equipment submittal and manage procurement for projects.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of the engineering team, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Perform site assessments and feasibility studies to determine the technical viability of proposed solar installations.
  • Act as a technical expert in meetings with clients, regulators, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with project managers, sales teams, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, proposals, and presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support and advice to clients during the pre-sales, design, and post-installation phases.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and other team members.
  • Participate in the preparation of bids, proposals, and presentations to win new projects.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control checks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements related to solar energy.
  • Interface with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to address technical inquiries and ensure compliance with standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • Must have a PE License
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in solar energy engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of solar PV system design, electrical engineering principles, and renewable energy technologies.
  • Proficiency in using solar design software (e.g., PVsyst, Helioscope, AutoCAD).
  • Excellent project management skills with a proven track record of successfully delivering complex projects.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with NEC and IEEE code and standards. Familiarity with NEC section 690 is a plus.
  • NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) Certification or equivalent (preferred).
  • OSHA safety certification (preferred).
  • Familiarity with permitting and utility interconnection process.

Salary: $100,000 – $120,000/ year
