Lead Engineer-Energy Storage and Clean Energy Policy

LOCATION: Orange, CT, Augusta, ME, Rochester or Binghamton, NY

SALARY RANGE: $101,404 to $139,000 dependent on experience level and location.

Job Summary

The energy storage engineer will act as an energy storage subject matter expert as a member of the Clean Energy Policy team and is responsible for supporting and/or leading technical and economic aspects of project/pilot definition, conceptualization, design, and management for energy storage and microgrid project and pilot development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and guidance on the development and execution of energy storage and microgrid technology including:
  • Development, review, and approval of design.
  • Preliminary design and review.
  • Interconnection planning and activities.
  • Engineering support with permitting requirements.
  • Develop standard scopes of work and maintain the consistency and quality of those deliverables.
  • Create and assess alternate methods of design for energy storage and microgrid project conceptualization and optimization to improve project competitiveness, especially related to clean energy technology and design optimization.
  • Develop, maintain, and utilize energy storage and microgrid analysis tools.
  • Lead and support the development of Networks standards for energy storage and microgrid technologies.
  • Assist internal and external stakeholders on energy storage and microgrid related technical matters as needed.
  • Support the procurement, contracting, and delivery of equipment and projects.
  • Review and approve the work and bids of vendors and consultants to ensure alignment with design criteria, applicable industry standards, cost-effective designs, and timely delivery.
  • Collaborate with the broader Clean Energy Policy team and key stakeholders in use-case evaluation, development of new opportunities, project commercialization, and reviews of technical studies, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Evaluate available and emerging storage technologies and communicate new technology development and associated costs, risks, and opportunities.
  • Attend and participate in relevant industry meetings, conferences, and committees.
  • Avangrid employees are assigned a system emergency role and in the event of a system emergency are expected to fulfill their assigned role.
  • Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent education with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience required.
    • Preference may be given to candidates with relevant advanced degree(s)
    • Professional Engineer (PE) registration and applicable field experience strongly preferred

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Proven experience in design and delivery of grid scale energy storage and microgrid technology solutions.
    • Working knowledge of energy storage and microgrid industry construction practices and construction contracts.
    • Strong understanding of the various battery technologies and industry practices, including industry vendor’s products, services, and terms.
    • Experienced in the energy industry and knowledge of business operations.
    • Effective influencing and communication skills.
    • Aptitude in AutoCAD, Python, and other coded tools.
    • Advanced PC skills
