As a Battery/Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Engineer you will be a part of the BakerRisk’s Low Carbon Energy (LCE) Risk Management group, leading battery safety related projects. The candidate will be supporting the battery related service areas BakerRisk currently offers and help identify and develop new service areas to be abreast with the latest battery technologies and safety challenges. The position will offer the opportunities to support BakerRisk testing team in performing full-scale battery tests.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform Hazard Mitigation Analysis (HMA) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) for BESS in accordance with NFPA 855.
  • Perform Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA) and develop fire protection design criteria for BESS and EV battery manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop fire protection strategies for utility scale BESS projects.
  • Perform fire modeling using CFD tools for consequence analysis and smoke modeling for battery applications.
  • Assist clients with permitting and inspection for BESS by collaborating with AHJs.
  • Support BakerRisk Testing team in planning, executing and data acquisition of large-scale battery fire tests per UL 9540A and other battery related tests.
  • Analyze battery test data, communicate results to team and propose new pathways for future tests.
  • Develop relationships with new battery clients, attending battery conferences, and support other business development activities.
  • Train others in the team on battery related topics.

Education And Experience

  • B.S. (required) or M.S. (preferred) in an engineering field (e.g. fire protection, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering or mechanical engineering).
  • Minimum 6+ years’ working experience in the battery field.
  • Strong background in battery fundamentals and battery test equipment and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation, and standard operating procedures.

Preference

  • Experience working with abuse testing at cell/module/pack levels and familiarity with safety testing standards such as UN 38.3, SAE 2464, RTCA DO-311.
  • Experience in code compliance reviews related to battery safety pertaining to standards such as UL9540/9540a, EN 0833-2 “Alarm systems for fire, intrusion and hold up”, VdS 2095- Automatic fire detection and fire alarm systems, planning and installation”, DIN 14675-“Fire Detection and fire alarm systems” and EN 15276-“Fixed firefighting systems”.

Typical Professional Attainments

  • Complete working toward or has obtained PE license or other professional certification.
  • Participation in professional and/or technical societies.
  • Published papers and articles.
