Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
The Fuels and Combustion Science group supports NRELs research mission in the areas of transportation and mobility decarbonization, efficiency, resilience, equity, and economics. The research of this team supports understanding and improving the viability of low carbon fuels. This group works in conjunction with key government and industry partners. The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day research and development activities in the analytical and fuel property laboratories by supporting research projects with running samples, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing results to share with senior researchers. Additional responsibilities will include calibrating and maintaining proper operation of analytical equipment.
Our team brings together a wide range of technical expertise and experience, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of advancing understanding at the intersection of fundamental science and industrial application. The primary goal of this position is to provide researchers within our group the support necessary to safely achieve their cutting-edge research objectives.
The Research Technician will support research through a variety of activities including:
- Operation, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repair of bench-scale analytical equipment and other equipment related to chemistry and fluid properties research
- Data collection, calibration, and maintenance of analytical instrumentation
- Sample production, blending, processing, and analysis
- Wet chemistry experimentation (including titrations)
- Writing/updating safety documentation, including operating procedures, equipment logs, and maintenance logs
- Assisting with on-boarding new equipment as needed
- Advancing safe laboratory practices through daily research activities

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate’s Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Substantial acquaintance with and understanding of general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Intermediate to advanced skills in research techniques and practices. Good written, verbal, team, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
Technician III:
- Basic to advanced knowledge of wet chemistry techniques
- Basic knowledge of chromatography techniques (e.g gas chromatography) and titration methods
- Basic knowledge of physical property testing of fluids (e.g surface tension and viscosity)
- Be willing to step outside the boundaries of a job title to promote continued success within the group
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic role with greatly varying daily expectations in a Team atmosphere with guidance from senior researchers
Technician IV:
- Proficient in wet chemistry techniques
- Advanced knowledge of chromatography techniques (e.g gas chromatography including two-dimensional gas chromatography techniques) and titration methods
- Advanced knowledge of physical property testing of fluids (e.g surface tension and viscosity)
- Demonstrated record of stepping outside the boundaries of a job title to promote continued success within a Team
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic role with greatly varying daily expectations in a Team atmosphere with minimal supervision
- Proven ability to learn new skills in parallel with continually supporting ongoing work.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Research Technician III / Annual Salary Range: $55,400 – $91,400
Job Profile: Research Technician IV / Annual Salary Range: $63,600 – $104,900
NREL takes into consideration a candidates education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employees salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
