Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking an experienced and motivated Research Engineer specializing in Wind Hybrid Energy Systems. This position focuses on systems engineering, controls, and the application of wind hybrid energy systems in distributed settings, industrial decarbonization, and community-based applications. The successful candidate will lead research initiatives, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute to groundbreaking advancements in sustainable energy solutions.

This position will have the opportunity to develop and lead innovative research projects that advance the integration and optimization of wind hybrid energy systems. They will write and secure proposals for external funding to support cutting-edge research, establish themselves as a national expert in the field influencing policy and industry standards, and lead and mentor multidisciplinary teams, fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment. Additionally, the scientist will work across various groups and centers within NREL to promote the adoption and deployment of sustainable energy solutions and engage with community stakeholders to ensure that research outcomes have positive socio-economic impacts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and conduct advanced research in wind hybrid energy systems, emphasizing systems engineering and controls.
  • Develop and implement innovative methodologies for integrating wind energy with other renewable energy sources and storage systems.
  • Analyze and optimize the performance of wind hybrid energy systems in distributed energy networks and industrial decarbonization projects.
  • Design and evaluate control strategies to enhance system reliability, efficiency, and resilience.
  • Collaborate with academic, industrial, and community partners to drive the adoption and deployment of wind hybrid energy solutions.
  • Prepare and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences and industry workshops.
  • Write and submit proposals to secure funding for research projects.
  • Mentor junior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
  • Contribute to grant writing and securing funding for research projects.
  • Establish a strong professional network and engage in activities that promote NREL’s research capabilities on a national level.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 9 or more years of experience . Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource. Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field with a focus on renewable energy systems.
  • Extensive experience in systems engineering and controls for renewable energy systems, particularly wind hybrid energy systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the integration of wind energy with other renewable sources and energy storage solutions.
  • Proficiency in using OpenMDAO for multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization.
  • Strong publication record in relevant scientific journals and conferences.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in engaging with community stakeholders and understanding the socio-economic impacts of energy systems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to write successful research proposals and secure external funding.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $95,500 – $171,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidates education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employees salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
