Opportunity Summary

The Control Room Operator (CRO) is responsible for the overall operation of the power plant, including managing, monitoring, and controlling all plant parameters from the Control Room DCS. This role involves safely operating all plant equipment, overseeing water chemistry, and participating in preventive and repair maintenance activities while ensuring adherence to safety protocols and permits. Additionally, the CRO maintains accurate logbooks, manages computerized maintenance work orders, and contributes to the Dighton safety culture and OSHA VPP program, all while working rotating 12-hour shifts and being available for call-ins as needed.

Primary Functions

  • Responsible for the general operation of the power plant, including operating, monitoring, inspecting, and controlling all plant parameters from the Control Room DCS.
  • Operate all plant equipment safely and effectively, as directed by marketing and system control, while maintaining all necessary permits.
  • Provide startup, shutdown, and operating services for all plant equipment.
  • Oversee plant water chemistry and ensure it is maintained within plant guidelines.
  • Participate in daily preventive, scheduled, and repair maintenance activities in a safe, effective, and timely manner. Assist with plant clean-up and housekeeping activities as directed.
  • Maintain the ability and awareness to work safely in various conditions. Oversee those under your direction, monitor and instruct staff on safe work habits, and caution others as necessary to ensure safe working practices.
  • Oversee the lockout/tag-out system, confined space, and hot work permits while on shift. Ensure personnel, including contractors, use and adhere to these systems correctly.
  • Maintain an accurate plant and state logbook of activities related to plant operations.
  • Input work orders for any plant deficiencies into the computerized maintenance management system during your shift. Update and maintain inventories and perform other entries into the system as directed.
  • Review past and present operating data and trends to identify changes in plant operation and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts and be on call to address potential power plant problems or outages. Also, cover other plant duties such as vacations or sick time.
  • Be an integral part of the Dighton safety culture and OSHA VPP program.
  • Perform other duties or tasks as assigned by plant management.

Working Relationships

The Control Room Operator reports to the Operations and Maintenance Manager and cooperates with all plant personnel relative to plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position entails a 12-hour rotating shift schedule, which includes extended working hours and variable shifts, including weekends and holidays, as necessary to meet schedule demands and respond to plant conditions. Periodic “on-call” status may also be required.

Compensation

The initial starting compensation will range from $50.00 – $60.00 per hour, depending on skills, qualifications, and experience.

Job Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid MA Second-Class Engineer License issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A Grade One or higher Wastewater Operator License is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment, typically acquired through four years of high school. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable. Alternatively, education from trade school, military service, or technical training is also considered highly beneficial.
  • Advanced in operating steam power plants with DCS controls, demonstrating a strong understanding of system dynamics and equipment management.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of power plant fundamentals, including steam generation, combustion processes, equipment operation, electrical theory, control systems, and water treatment practices.
  • Skilled in interpreting and responding to computer-generated data, instrumentation, gauges, readouts, and color variations. Capable of reading and understanding control logic diagrams, P&IDs, and other technical documentation essential for effective power plant operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain composure and think clearly during emergency situations, ensuring quick and effective decision-making.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential. The ideal candidate should excel in interacting with and motivating team members, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license at all times.
