Business Unit- Renewables – Offshore – O&M – SITE Geographic

Location- Site – Martha’s Vineyard MA

Salary: The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $112.5k to 132.5k

Job Summary

The Sr. Wind Farm Operator will support site operations by managing and coordinating the safe, efficient and cost-effective transfer of personnel and equipment from the onshore base to the offshore work sites (and vice versa) via marine vessels and helicopters.

The Sr. Wind Farm Operator will also be responsible for ensuring that all necessary conditions are satisfied before staff can commence transit to the work site e.g. work orders are in place, tools and equipment are available, staff are competent/authorised to undertake work and sea and weather conditions are within acceptable parameters.

The Sr. Wind Farm Operator will also be responsible for the remote monitoring and operation of turbine status via SCADA in order to identify any issues that require corrective action.

Job Duties

The individual will:

  • Plan, coordinate and supervise activities related to the transfer of personnel and equipment by vessels and / or helicopter to ensure that this is carried out in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Facilitate work control (permit to work system) to ensure that permits are in place for planned activity.
  • Supporting the planning of work schedules to maximise the most effective use of personnel and transfer vessels/ helicopters.
  • Establish access parameters taking account of weather forecasts, sea conditions and light conditions to ensure consistent go, no go and stand-down decisions are made in order to ensure safe transit and access to work sites can be achieved.
  • Monitor weather conditions to ensure the safety of personnel and to optimize working time offshore.
  • Coordinate with National control center / Site HV Manager if HV switching is required

Conduct HV switching operations

  • Initiate and coordinate the project emergency response
  • Initiate (ERP) where required in order to effectively resolve the situation.
  • Ensure adherence to all H&S procedures associated with maritime/offshore working
  • Act as Operational Controller under the WTSR
  • Monitor WTG SCADA and act upon alarms / issues where they arise to ensure efficient response times are achieved and generation maximized.
  • Keep records on daily activities, usage of vessels and weather conditions
  • Regularly report on defined KPIs through the Company standard systems
  • Supply data to assist in the short and long term maintenance planning process
  • Regularly update management on site activities to keep them informed of any issues/challenges experienced.
  • Maximize offshore H&S performance by complying with all applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures and through the reporting and rectification of any non-conformances.
  • Effective and efficient operation of offshore logistics in cooperation with Siemens and other contractors
  • Optimize operational expenditure through efficient and safe marine control procedures
  • Coordinate the movement & positions of vessels on the pontoon to ensure mobilization/demobilization is a streamlined as possible
  • Support coordinating all marine traffic in the site, and vessels transiting between site and main port
  • Monitoring all vessel and personnel movements offshore by use of Personnel Tracking System (PTS) and Vessel Tracking System (VTS). Guaranteeing the location of all personnel offshore is known should an emergency situation arise
  • Ensuring all personnel going offshore are suitably qualified and hold all the necessary certification
  • Responsible for the safe execution of the Emergency Response Plan

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of working in a marine coordination & control room operator role
  • Previous experience working in the offshore wind industry or industry with similar operational and safety challenges (e.g. Oil & Gas)
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems, & Marine Control systems
  • Excellent communications skills enabling you to communicate your messages smoothly and efficiently to stakeholders at all organizational levels
  • Have project planning or equivalent experience
  • Have excellent H&S knowledge, ideally within the offshore working environment
  • Offshore marine or helicopter coordination experience, including knowledge of the WTSR/HVSR
  • Ability to gain authorization under the High Voltage Safety Rules
  • Experience with VHF radio telecommunication systems
  • Knowledge of applicable marine, aviation and port regulations
  • Use real time applications for performance monitoring, diagnostics and power production information
  • Good IT skills in MS Office

Minimum Criteria (mandatory)

  • Electrical Engineering, or equivalent qualification, but proven working background in HV electricity-Essential
  • Knowledge and experience of working under HV Safety Rules-Essential
  • Good knowledge of HV equipment including cables, transformers and switchgears (GIS and AIS)-Essential
  • Experience of the offshore wind industry-Desirable
  • Working knowledge of US Health & Safety legislation-Essential
  • Experience of using Scada systems for the purpose of remote monitoring and interrogation of assets-Essential
  • Experience of HV systems of 66 kV / 220kV or above and associated equipment and protection systems-Essential

Special Requirements (not mandatory)

  • Working knowledge of US Health & Safety legislation-Essential
  • LV & HV fault finding and analysis-Essential
  • Experience of working in multidiscipline teams-Desirable
  • GWO Training (desirable, however full training will be given)-Desirable
  • Experience in a marine co-ordination role in the maritime and/or offshore sector-Desirable
  • Emergency response coordination and communications with rescue authorities-Desirable
