Our client’s Heat-to-Power R&D team is developing a novel heat-to-power discharge unit for their combined heat and power (CHP) long-duration energy storage product, which will enable them to expand the scope of industrial decarbonization efforts.
As part of this R&D team, you will be in charge of thermal modeling of this discharge unit and its subsystems.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Conduct thermal and mechanical analyses, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT), and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Develop robust heat transfer models to quantify performance of novel heat-engine and CHP product for various geometries, considering thermo-mechanical stress, conduction, radiation, and convection.
- Collaborate with mechanical design and test engineers to establish thermal and system requirements, inform component selection, and help make the right tradeoffs for manufacturability.
- Support the development and execution of test plans at both bench and full scale, to validate models.
- Define and maintain thermal requirements for components and systems, and contribute to cost and performance roadmaps.
- Develop and maintain internal design practices and documentation.
- As needed, assist with material selection, detailed mechanical design, prototyping and testing.
- Mentoring junior engineers, sharing thermal intuition and design approaches.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in thermal engineering, with 3+ years of that with focus on CFD and thermal FEA modeling.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, CFD, transport phenomena, and thermodynamics fundamentals.
- Experience working collaboratively in teams that built first-of-a-kind hardware systems.
- Ability to work both independently and closely in teams, as required.
- Proficiency in data analysis and presentation.
- High level of proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), preferably SolidWorks.
- Expert-level proficiency in thermal modeling packages, preferably Ansys.
- Attention to detail with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Additional Qualifications Desired
- Graduate degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, or equivalent.
- Experience with modeling systems with combined heat-transfer modes (conduction, convection, radiation).
- Experience with modeling of equipment for high-temperature (> 500 C) environments.
- Willingness to stretch into different roles in the team as needed, including mechanical design, material evaluation, prototyping and testing.
