Job Description

About Us

Molten Industries’ mission is to decarbonize the world’s transportation and heavy industrial sectors. We are commercializing breakthrough technology to make high-quality, CO2-neutral graphite and hydrogen using only methane and electricity as inputs. Transportation (cars, trucks, ships, planes) and heavy industry (cement, steel, chemicals, fertilizer) currently make up over 40% of global CO2 emissions. Graphite is up to 25% of the mass of lithium-ion batteries used in phones, laptops, and electric vehicles. Battery-grade graphite and clean hydrogen can enable carbon-neutral or carbon-negative transport, shipping, fertilizer, steel, cement, and chemicals.

Molten started in 2021 out of a garage at Stanford and is backed by top-tier venture capital firms and a world-class advisory board. We believe in using our talents for the most meaningful work of our lives – mitigating the effects of climate change. We want to do the kind of work that you can write home about. The work that youll tell your grandkids about. Engineering feats, growth miracles, and rock-solid, real-world change. At Molten we believe in dreaming big, working with urgency, and getting our hands dirty.
Join us in our effort to push the final frontier of decarbonization.

The Role

As a core member of Moltens early team, you will lead the design and build out of electrochemical systems involved in the production of graphite and hydrogen. You will help design, build, evaluate, and test new ideas and setups as we scale from our pilot system to industrial plants. You are a scrappy self-starter with a bias to action. You enjoy being hands-on and building physical systems, and you are comfortable translating complex problems into achievable goals. You are eager to play a key role in the fight against climate change..

What you will do

  • Lead the scale-up of an electrochemical technology from lab to commercial scale in record time
  • Lead development and commercialization of technologies for refining, purification, and chemical transformation using electrochemistry
  • Prototype, test, and analyze electrochemical systems
  • Work closely with a small technical founding team to push our graphite and hydrogen production technology to industrial scale

What you will bring

  • We are looking for candidates with different experience levels ranging from 2 to 10+ years of experience
  • BS / MS / PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mining/Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Excellent fundamental engineering knowledge of electrochemistry, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and materials
  • Hands-on experience with battery, electrolyzer, electrowinning, or fuel cell design, build, and testing
  • Experience with electrochemical testing techniques including potentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, and instrumentation
  • Experience with large and complex industrial products, or chemical processing facilities
  • Track record of solving difficult chemical R&D and scale-up problems
  • Track record of linking of research and development activities with successful real world implementation
  • Experience with the build of pilot or full-scale chemical plants
  • Experience designing for 24/7 industrial use, with safety and reliability at the forefront
  • Hands-on experience is essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Bonus Points

  • Startup experience or experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Lithium ion battery build and testing experience
  • Hydrometallurgical processing experience
  • Experience in established electrochemical industries, including batteries, electrowinning or electroplating, chlor-alkali, or hydrogen production
