Department Summary:
MITRE Lab’s Emerging Engineering and Physical Sciences Department is seeking a senior engineer with expertise in nuclear technologies to work in a dynamic analytical environment focused on solving our customers energy technology and resilience challenges. This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in current and emerging technologies across its diverse membership. MITRE’s advanced energy program provides innovative solutions to strengthen energy resilience and readiness to improve national energy security. We are expanding our program to address key challenges and opportunities such as critical energy infrastructure, battery storage, microgrids, and operational energy exercises.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Analysis of advanced nuclear, small modular, and micronuclear reactors and/or deployment challenges through analytical, model-base (e.g., engineering models), and experimental assessment.
- Evaluation of future nuclear technologies (e.g., water, gas, liquid metal, and molten salt reactors) and the associated scientific- and market-driven trends and how these would address unique MITRE customer environments and needs.
- Characterization of the maturity, limitations, and capabilities of nuclear technologies.
- Design and evaluation of a wide variety of power and energy technologies and determination of courses of action to meet customer requirements as a part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team.
- Framing and communicating energy system performance and cost in customer applications.
- Transdisciplinary collaboration with diverse experts from across MITRE, our customers, and partners, providing subject matter expertise in nuclear and associated advanced energy technologies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS and 5 years of relevant experience in one of the following fields: Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Deep technical expertise in one or more nuclear technology areas, including: performance testing and prediction, safety analysis and management, packaging and ruggedization, manufacturing processes and quality control, system/application integration, and nuclear design.
- Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.
- The ability to conduct research and development of new energy and power systems to meet customer requirements in a collaborative environment with both internal and external researchers.
- The ability to think critically and be proactive in pursuing research and problem-solving with minimal supervision.
- Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS or PhD in one of the following areas: Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and/or Physics.
- Extensive experience and expertise, including recent publications, in the design and evaluation of nuclear reactors.
- Basic understanding of a broad range of energy storage, energy conversion, energy harvesting technologies, power distribution, and power management systems that enhance energy resilience.
