Role Overview:
We are looking for a highly skilled Professional Engineer to lead our ‘Sustainable Asset’ business unit in the US, headquartered in Austin. This role will involve collaborating with the London-based Global Sustainable Asset Business Unit Lead to drive the decarbonization of new and existing buildings across the US. As the leader of the ‘Sustainable Assets’ team, you will provide technical expertise in sustainable building design and optimization. You will guide projects through sustainability certifications (LEED, BREEAM, etc.), apply building physics principles, and develop Net Zero Carbon strategies. Additionally, you will implement building optimization frameworks such as CRREM to achieve low-carbon goals. The ideal candidate will have a robust engineering background with extensive experience in delivering low-carbon solutions within the construction and real estate industries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead projects aimed at decarbonizing both new and existing buildings, ensuring alignment with sustainability goals and compliance with relevant certifications (LEED, BREEAM, WELL, etc.).
- Develop and implement strategies for reducing carbon emissions and optimizing building performance across portfolios and single assets.
- Lead the undertaking ASHRAE Level I, II and III and ISO 5002 energy audits and provide actionable recommendations for reducing operational energy, water, waste and environmental impact using tools like CRREM and other building optimization frameworks.
- Be able to guide Clients on Whole Life Carbon, Embodied Carbon and LCA assessments.
- Lead sustainable design projects throughout the American Institute of Architects (AIA) design and construction stages.
- Collaborate with architects, HVAC engineers, civil/structural engineers, project managers, contractors, cost consultants and other stakeholders to integrate sustainability principles into the building lifecycle.
- Be the technical expert and guide the team in sustainable design and construction methods.
- Be the technical expert and support the team in green HVAC systems design and implementation.
- Provide knowledge and support on preliminary cost planning of green HVAC systems, building energy management systems, LED lighting and controls and building envelope efficiency improvements.
- Manage and mentor a team of engineers and sustainability professionals, ensuring successful delivery of projects within scope, time, and budget.
- Oversee sustainable design initiatives, ensuring best practices are applied throughout the design and construction phases.
- Provide support to the business development during the bidding process.
- Be responsible for project resourcing and utilization of the team.
- Collaborate closely with other business unit leads, to identify synergies and promote cross selling of Longevity services.
- Collaborate closely with other global sustainable assets leads to elevate and standardize the services provided as much as possible.
- Stay up to date on industry advancements, building codes, and regulatory frameworks related to decarbonization and sustainable building practices.
- Prepare and present reports, strategies, and technical insights to clients and internal teams, ensuring clear communication of complex sustainability concepts.
- Manage client relationships, ensuring project objectives and sustainability goals are met, while identifying opportunities for further collaboration.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Civil) or a related field; a masters degree is a plus.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in sustainability consulting or engineering, with a focus on decarbonization, sustainable building design, and/or building optimization.
- Have experience and knowledge of project design and construction phases. Particularly experienced in the AIA phases: i) Pre-Design, ii) Schematic Design, iii) Design Development, iv) Building Permit, v) Construction Documents, vi) Bidding & Negotiation, vii) Construction Administration.
- Experience in undertaking ASHRAE Level I, II, III and ISO 5002 Energy Audits. Must have experience in identifying actionable energy conservation measures (ECMs), producing ECM CAPEX costs, undertake cost benefit analysis and simple payback/ROI calculations.
- Have a clear understanding and experience of MEP/ HVAC and building energy management systems for offices, logistic centers, multi-residential, retail and data centers.
- Have experience and good understanding on when to implement building envelope improvements, such as enhance insulation, replace windows with low U-Value etc.
- Have a good understanding of the Whole Life Carbon stages, upfront embodied carbon, lifecycle embodied carbon and circular economy principles. Some experience with LCA software such as OneClick is desirable.
- Have a good understanding of BIM, BIM software (REVIT Autodesk)
- Have knowledge of parametric design tools, such as Rhino Grasshopper, is desirable.
- Experience leading projects through sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, WELL) and understanding of frameworks such as CRREM.
- Strong project management skills with a track record of successfully managing small to medium-sized teams.
- Proven experience in reducing carbon emissions in the built environment, including both new construction and retrofit projects.
- Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and develop actionable strategies for sustainability and energy efficiency.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical information to non-technical audiences.
- Building Physics experience is a plus.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or actively working towards PE status is preferred.
