Job Description

This position is responsible for leading the Risk Management activity at CleanChoice Energy. The position would lead enterprise risk management with a strong focus on energy market risks associated with retail supply and hedging activities, risk management of owned renewable generating assets and project acquisition processes. Risk management would work with management to codify operating parameters, manage approved algorithms and monitor data feeds used in the business. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the role also has a direct line to the Risk Committee of the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

  • Develop short-term and long-term strategies for the risk management department and manage departmental objectives and plans.
  • Direct the oversight of market, credit, operations and operational risks, including forward price curves for all portfolio positions.
  • Direct the oversight of contract administration, transaction compliance, transaction confirmation and asset acquisition/construction risks.
  • Ensure that all risks are fully assessed, valuation of assets, products and transactions is appropriate, and transactions are priced to compensate for risks incurred.
  • Maintain a workforce planning and resource strategy for the risk management function, ensuring that there are adequate skilled resources to meet planned service delivery or functional objectives, including quantitative resources to evaluate underlying financial tools.
  • Ensure that all information technology systems, tools and processes adequately evaluate all forms of risks.
  • Develop key risk reporting metrics and methodologies to generate these metrics consistently and repetitively.
  • Provide an independent validation of trading strategies, transaction risks and other risks for senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Provide regular reporting and education to the Board of Directors on the material risks within the company’s portfolio.
  • Ensure that all risk management policies and procedures are adhered to and ensure policy compliance and remediation.
  • Establish procedures to provide for accurate and timely monitoring and reporting of periodic risk exposure and positions.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate quantification and valuation methodologies to evaluate capital at risk and potential collateral requirements.
  • Direct the negotiation of collateral support terms from any counterpart or entity.
  • Verify compliance with all credit counterparties and monitor/ report credit risk levels and market conditions that may impact future credit risk needs.
  • Establish the oversight and risk management framework for the company’s renewable generation facilities. Provides risk management oversight for all three parts of the business in the future.
  • Liaise with front office Retail management and personnel to understand current and potential energy position strategies and tactics.
  • Maintain the process for utilizing standard contract terms for forward retail and wholesale transactions
  • Oversee cross-functional efforts to modernize risk management and related functions in partnership with other front and back office constituents.
  • Enhance the company’s capability to evaluate expected and actual performance within its business process and information technology platforms.
  • Assist the back office in developing plans, policies and procedures for the accounting, budgeting and intracompany allocations of cost and revenue models.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Ten or more years experience in leading a risk management function in the energy industry (power, natural gas, renewables, or other energy commodity trading environment).
  • Demonstrated risk management experience in at least one of three areas – retail energy, asset ownership, and renewable development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Accounting, Finance or other related field. A Masters degree is preferred.
  • Experience working inside an energy commodity trading and retail energy provider.
  • Experience in building a team of risk management professionals for an energy provider.
  • Strong leadership ability to clearly articulate and execute on a strategic or tactical direction, offering a clear view on the risks the company is considering and the potential trade-offs.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), and independent system operator (ISO) rules and regulations.
  • Capability to collaborate cross-functionality with a capacity to build a strong culture within the entire organization.
  • Ability to make decisions that are guided by company strategy and objectives.
  • Expert knowledge of risk management processes and principles.
  • Advanced skills in financial and risk analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and financial principles, theory and practices.
  • Expert knowledge of corporate policies, practices, philosophy, operations and key company developments related to regulatory, financial, operating and legal issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulations and laws of state institutions related to energy delivery, renewable energy credits and market participation.

CleanChoice Energy is a remote-first work environment and this position is work from home with up to 25% travel.
