Job Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES
Under directive supervision, lays and grades piping; constructs and repairs manholes; carries through assignments, at times, with the assistance of other employees of equal or lesser grade; performs duties such as:
Laying, leveling, grading, and blocking pipe; installing and blocking in place bends, valves, cocks, drips, sleeve and special fittings; driving pipe;
Caulking joints in bell and spigot cast-iron pipe, bends, fittings, sleeves, and drip pots with materials, such as, yarn, cement, and lead, installing special sleeves and fittings, district governors, and recording gauges as directed;
Making permanent repairs to mains, services and associated equipment; installing clamps, saddles, and sleeves; replacing broken and defective pipe and fittings; operates air driven hack saw;
Making temporary repairs to leaks in mains, services, and associated equipment by means, such as, soap or other material confined by cloth or tape bandage;
Under close supervision, shuts off the flow of gas in pipes by use of bags and stoppers and opens, closes and throttles main valves;
Gassing out mains and services, under close supervision;
Clearing stoppages in mains and services by means, such as, compressed gases, probing rods, wire brushes, and snakes, under close supervision; cleaning stoppages in mains and services using vacuum tanks, suction pumps and steam, in conjunction with the operator of the steamer truck;
Installing meters and service regulators when required in connection with service transfers and/or renewal or maintenance of residential gas service piping (including buildings with up to 8 family units); disconnecting and reconnecting meters and service regulators and relighting pilots on appliances except those on complicated industrial and commercial appliances;
Drilling and tapping holes with tapping machine; performing same operations when pipe is filled with gas, under close supervision;
Constructing and repairing concrete, brick and masonry manholes, hand holes, pits, walls, curbs, foundations, and drains;
Making temporary and permanent pavement repairs and simple masonry construction and repairs; checking filled ditches for settlement and bringing surfaces up to grade, as weather and ground conditions require; measuring area of pavement repairs;
Observing, as directed, street excavation work of other utilities, contractors, and public works departments where such work may be close to the gas distribution system; making location of gas lines;
Shoring, bracing, and bridging excavations;
Operating trucks of five-ton capacity or over equipped with winch;
Installing insulating joints, anodes, and test stations on steel mains for cathodic protection;
Operating all types excavating and plow-in type equipment (5000 lbs. Gross weight maximum) as a member of assigned crew; transporting, performing minor field repairs and servicing on same; must have at least six months experience as a Street Mechanic to operate ride-on type excavating or plow-in equipment.
Performing the duties of the Mechanic (9441), Drip Truck Operator (9442) and Street Mechanic 2nd Class (9421) as assigned.
Performing other similar or less skilled work of the occupational group.

QUALIFICATIONS Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Must meet the Companys requirements as to general qualifications; must have all the qualifications of Street Apprentice and, in addition: Must have 1 year of experience as Street Apprentice or the equivalent; Must have demonstrated aptitude for and ability in the performance of the duties of Street Apprentice; Must have a thorough knowledge of the common construction, maintenance, and repair procedures, methods and practices of the Gas Business Unit; Must have a thorough knowledge of the care and use of caulking tools, pneumatic tools, tackle, rigging, and other equipment used in the work; Must be able to produce work of a high quality in a safe and efficient manner; Must know the Companys safety rules applying to the work; and Must be able to maintain harmony and safety and to obtain satisfactory work results from employees assigned to work with them. Must posess a Valid U. S. driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record. NOTE: Street Mechanics are eligible to bid for any job opening in the Street Department Occupational Group after six months in this classification.
