Job Description

General Summary

GTI Energy, the nations leading research, development, deployment, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an Emissions senior scientist in our Zero Emission Systems Team. This unit performs research, development, and demonstrations focused on technology and information aimed at greenhouse gas emission quantification, mitigation, environmental impacts, energy infrastructure integrity, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, procedural review, renewable energy, hydrogen adoption, technology validation and integration.

The qualified candidate will conduct research and lead the data analysis for a wide variety of projects focused on identification, quantification, and mitigation of methane emissions across the natural gas supply chain. The individual will also work with a diverse team of scientists and engineers to develop cross-cutting projects focused on minimizing environmental impacts of future energy system decarbonization efforts. The candidate initially will be responsible for supporting efforts currently underway and lead by others which will act to support the candidate as they develop their own research projects in their research field.

Work Location

The position is based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday. The candidate may also be able to work remotely under GTI Energy Remote Work policy and pursuant to approval by the Vice President of the business unit.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Ability to effectively participate and efficiently communicate complex technical challenges and perform applied research. Strong experience and technical background in core research areas is essential.
  • Provides interpretation of complex data analysis and explanation of analytical methods for use by a non-expert audience.
  • Facilitates collaborations with academia, government, and corporations.
  • Applies standard engineering/scientific practices to complex features of designs.
  • Applies data analytics to core research areas.
  • Plans and conducts work requiring judgment and independent evaluation.
  • Prepares test plans and carries out testing using good science and practices.
  • Safety first mindset. Attends safety meetings, safety training, and applies safety standards.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Strong background in reducing emissions and developing mitigation technologies across energy infrastructure and energy operations.
  • Strong data science background
  • Work with current and prospective clients to understand their needs and identify new technical and/or business areas of activity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including writing and delivering technical proposals, reports, and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver professional results with high customer satisfaction under little or no supervision.
  • Potential for travel for industry events, customer site visits, field demonstrations or testing.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree or higher in Engineering, Science, or other similar disciplines; 7+ years in related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • 5+ years of relevant, professional level work experience after an M.S
    • 2+ years of relevant, professional level work experience after a Ph.D.
  • Prior work experience in the natural gas/energy industry operations or work focused on quantification of greenhouse gas emissions is desired.
  • Experimental and field research experience is desired.
  • Experience with multi-discipline collaborative research programs preferred.
