Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in Golden, Colorado, is looking for an individual with knowledge in thermal energy storage, phase change materials (PCMs), heat transfer analysis, hygrothermal modelling, thermal control systems, whole-building modeling, buildings energy analysis and thermal resilience, Python methods and data analytics with a focus on supporting NRELs building research and communities particularly low- and moderate-income and disadvantaged communities.
The candidate shall understand the impact of thermal energy storage research on flexibility and resiliency of the grid and buildings to help identify R&D opportunities (e.g., decarbonization of the U.S. power grid).
The successful candidate shall be able to execute the following activities as they are required for this position:
  • Determine how different forms of energy storage and their integration into envelope and equipment can benefit buildings and communities.
  • Thermal energy storage research.
  • Conducting python plugins for the incorporation of thermal switches in envelopes impacting the whole building energy analysis.
  • Conducting research related with thermal resilience for buildings against extreme thermal weather events.
  • Optimization of buildings behind-the-meter thermal energy storage through modeling methodologies and modular simulation frameworks for integration of TES systems.
  • Perform experimental evaluations including design, fabrication, and setup of full-scale building wall panels with PCMs and other innovative materials to evaluate the energy performance.
  • Perform experiments in environmental chambers including the troubleshooting of the sensor and control system.
  • Help develop strategies for research and development of emerging technologies in Buildings.
  • Identify current activities, gaps, opportunities, and goals, along with how the current Buildings technology structure could benefit from energy storage technologies.
  • Help create tools for decision making and to recommend courses of action on energy efficiency technologies for Buildings.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 – $143,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidates education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employees salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
