Job Summary:

The Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences Department integrates plant sciences with agroecological approaches to create more resilient crops and landscapes in response to a changing climate and other global pressures placed on food-energy-water systems. The Ellison lab facilitates and conducts research and outreach activities that support the success of the emerging hemp industry in the Midwest.

The Research Program Manager will be responsible for coordinating staffing, supplies, and equipment to meet the needs of the hemp breeding and genetics program. This position will support the program in budgeting, personnel, lab, greenhouse, and field management. The ideal candidate will have exceptional organizational, supervisory, and communication/interpersonal skills. They will also serve as an expert authority in hemp production and provide technical expertise through oral and written mediums.

Responsibilities:

Plans and leads operational, outreach, and promotional activities of a research program and serves as a subject matter expert.

  • 30% Plans and directs the day-to-day operational activities of one or multiple research programs or units according to established research objectives in alignment with strategic plans and initiatives
  • 10% Assists in the development, coordination, and facilitation of trainings and workshops for internal and external audiences to disseminate research program developments and information
  • 10% Plans, develops, and implements processes and protocols to support research aims
  • 5% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 15% Serves as a unit liaison and subject matter expert among internal and external stakeholder groups, collaborates across disciplines and functional areas, provides program information, and promotes the accomplishments and developments of scholars and research initiatives
  • 10% Monitors program budget(s) and approves unit expenditures
  • 5% Develops policies, procedures, and institutional agreements on behalf of the program
  • 10% Maintains and manages electronic databases internally for the research program and for external/public databases.
  • 5% Participates in development and execution of lab, field, and department safety guidelines and best practices.

Education:

Required
Master’s Degree
Agronomy, Horticulture or other related fields

Qualifications:

Required
  • Experience coordinating multiple groups/projects as a team leader.
  • Prior experience managing operational budgets and lab/field inventory required.
  • Experience with supply requisition, maintenance, and repair of field and lab equipment.
  • Technical skills required for development and management of external/internal electronic research databases.
  • 5+ years conducting hemp (industrial and high cannabinoid) production research for both field and indoor experiments.
  • Must have supervisory experience.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
  • Experience using farm equipment/tractors.

Preferred

  • Experience developing outreach programs.
  • Experience designing and constructing controlled environment systems (drip irrigation systems, hydroponics, grow tents).
  • Familiarity with state and federal hemp laws and regulations

License/Certification:

Required:
Pesticide Applicator – State Licensure
Ability to obtain a WI pesticide applicator license.

Required: Ability to obtain a USDA Hemp Research license.

Required:
Drivers License – Valid
Must hold valid driver’s license.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $80,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $80,000 – $100,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.
