Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. This Group Manager (GM) position will lead the Separation Sciences Group within NREL’s Renewable Resources and Enabling Sciences Center (RRES) of the BioEnergy Science and Technology (BEST) directorate. This group focuses on developing and demonstrating separation technologies as part of a sustainable energy future. Product separation is often the most expensive and energy intensive step in energy related processes and this group works collaboratively with other researchers to help develop pathways for producing renewable fuels and chemicals, for decarbonizing industry, for extracting critical materials from waste streams, for recycling plastics, and many other applications. As the urgency for the implementation sustainable and efficient energy technologies increases, the need for low cost-effective separation techniques grows and a goal of Separation Sciences Group is to keep on the leading edge for new separation technologies to meet this national need. The GM will help lead efforts to develop a strategic vision for separation science research at NREL and for the nation to help address this. This will involve collaboration with other groups at NREL involved in membrane and material science, computational sciences, conversion sciences and process scaling.
The GM will lead a group of 15- 25 scientific and engineering research professionals, postdoctoral researchers, and student interns. Candidates must have demonstrated independent research in separation science during their career. The candidates experience should be backed by high-quality peer-reviewed publications, successful research proposals, and time spent training and mentoring personnel. The GM will be expected to apply these skills to technical and project management, strategic planning, and the advancement of a safe and secure work environment. In their role, the GM will recruit and retain outstanding talent, provide mentorship, guidance, and career development to group members, support a diverse workforce, provide strategic direction for business and capability development, and contribute to proposal development for a large range of sponsors, particularly the Department of Energy/EERE, industry and other government agencies.
The GM will lead and maintain a culture of safety as a core value in their group. This will require the quick establishment of a deep knowledge of all relevant NREL safety procedures and processes as well as an awareness of all hazards to which their direct reports are exposed. The successful candidate will work closely with the RRES Center leadership and the leadership in the BEST Directorate to identify and develop new capabilities and to steward existing capabilities.
This position also carries Principal Investigator responsibilities (65% of time). The applicant will be required to lead and participate in research projects, including projects that are funded through successful competitive proposals led by the candidate. Often these projects will involve multidisciplinary teams involving linked processes and the applicant will be required to lead the separation component. Proposal preparation will involve working in teams to respond to funding opportunities primarily from the Department of Energy such as Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO), Industrial Efficiency & Decarbonization Office (IEDO), Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), Basic Energy Sciences (BES), and directly from industry. There will be many funding opportunities in renewable fuels, chemicals and materials development, carbon dioxide conversion, industrial efficiency and metal extraction. The laboratory and directorate have many other complementary groups that collaborate heavily with Separations Sciences such as the Chemical Catalysis and Reaction Engineering, Synthetic Biology, Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing Engineering, and Polymer Science and Engineering. NREL also features a pilot plant facility in which separations unit operations are a key research focus.
