Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the principal investigator and project team with coordination and implementation of suicide prevention trainings, programming, and evaluation
  • Assist with communication and coordination with/among project partners (e.g., healthcare, K-12 education, community based organizations, youth groups, etc.)
  • Assist with preparation and submission of reports and manuscripts relating to mental health and suicide prevention, including conducting literature searches and formatting data tables
  • Assist with development and dissemination of public health messaging products (e.g., brochures, website content, etc.) relating to mental health/suicide prevention awareness
  • Participate in community trainings, events, and forums to promote mental health/suicide prevention for the public (some may require travel to community sites, including neighbor islands, pending university travel restrictions)
  • Participate in meetings, conference/video calls, and trainings for the project
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be a classified degree-seeking graduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa;
  • Be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Maintain 6 credits per semester with the exception of those who have reached 800 (dissertation) or 700F (thesis)
  • Able to work respectfully with diverse communities, and with a heightened level of sensitivity necessary for mental health/suicide prevention work
  • Able to work and time-manage independently, under direction of the principal investigator and project team, and with appropriate training
  • Prior experience conducting literature searches via online academic search engines (e.g., Pubmed, Psycinfo, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of computers and basic processing and connectivity programs, including Microsoft Suite (e.g., Word, Excel) and Zoom
  • Must have strong skills with respect to communication (oral and written), organization, and attention-to-detail
  • Have access to transportation for visits/meetings with community sites
  • Must be personally ready/able to work in suicide prevention (those who have recently been impacted by suicide loss, or are personally struggling, sometimes find it difficult to engage in suicide prevention work)

Desirable Qualifications:

  • University of Hawaii graduate student in public health, social work, psychology, or other similar field
  • Knowledge or experience in the fields of mental health and/or suicide prevention
  • Prior experience writing and submitting IRB protocols/applications, agency reports, and/or peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Prior experience developing/designing public health awareness products (e.g., brochures, website and social media content, etc.)
  • Prior experience on projects that required interfacing with diverse populations, community partners, and the general public
  • Able to commit to project for at least the 2024-2025 academic year
