The Role:
Monitors and controls the NWN transmission/distribution system and other contracted pipelines to assure safe, reliable, economic and equitable delivery to all customers. Responds to emergencies that impact the NWN and other pipeline systems, including related upstream problems on the Northwest Pipeline system and downstream customer service issues. Day to Day:
Assures system integrity and safe, equitable service to all customers of NWN and other contracted pipelines by analyzing pressures, volumes, and odorization, operating remotely-controlled equipment, regulators and valves, and coordinating construction crews and directing field personnel.
Oversees emergency response activities related to the safety and reliability of the distribution and transmission system. Ensures optimum public and employee safety with minimal disruption to business operations. Assesses emergency situations, directs emergency response actions, assigns field personnel and resources, and communicates with departments. Determines level of urgency, acts as a management representative on Companys behalf to inform, consult on, or solve problems. Issue notifications to outside entities as required.
Forecast and manage company gas supplies, including storage, to meet changing gas demands on the NWN system Provide timely reports of system send out, weather conditions, and related information.
Monitor customer gas usage to minimize billing issues, such as inaccurate measurement or overrun penalties.
Understand and utilize the company’s SCADA system, including the associated telemetry and communications networks, to maintain overall system operation effectiveness.
Identifies process and system improvements / optimizations; provides business decision support; provides feedback to clients; supports management with necessary operational feedback and support.
Must comply with DOT mandated Operator Qualification program as a Gas Controller.
Other duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective system operations.
Supports Companys commitment to a culture of safe work practices.
Must be able to report fit and ready for duty when working non-traditional rotating shifts. Schedules are created to allow Controllers sufficient off duty time to achieve 8 hours of continuous sleep. Come on your first day with:
Knowledge of pipeline operating systems including standard practices, pressure regulation, gas quality, measurement, telemetry, liquefaction/vaporization at LNG plants, storage injection/withdrawal at underground facilities, and odorization. The level 2 position requires in-depth knowledge. If hired into Gas Controller 1, it is the expectation that the incumbent will progress to Gas Controller 2.
Gas Controller experience preferred.
NWN field experience preferred.
Requires a working understanding of DOT, FERC, OPUC, and WUTC regulations as they affect pipeline operations and service to customers.
PC skills including spreadsheet, database, word processing and presentation applications to compile, maintain, and present information. This includes the ability to learn Company proprietary applications.
Must be able to visualize, analyze, and take action on multiple system problems occurring simultaneously in a dynamic and ever changing environment.
Strong analytical skills, including the ability to think logically and present decisions based on relevant information; understanding impacts of decisions made.
Demonstrated skills in providing excellent client/customer service and collaboration, including the ability to successfully negotiate and manage conflict.
Acts as a technical resource for others.
Clear, accurate and thorough writing skills for documentation and report writing.
Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to interact with employees at all levels with tact, confidentiality, and diplomacy.
Ability to function in a highly cohesive team environment to complete department goals and act independently to accomplish personal responsibilities while treating others with respect and dignity.
Skill and ability to perform multi-task functions, organize, and manage time effectively to meet deadlines and balance priorities.
Sustained sitting for 10-12 hours per day, hand/finger dexterity and ability to grasp, bend, lift, reach, and stoop.

Base salary range: $70,700.00 – $97,000.00 (Level 1) or $83,850.00 – $119,450.00 (Level 2) per year, depending on qualifications
Annual Target Incentive: Level 1 , 7.5% target
Level 2, 9.5% target
Targets are calculated using eligible earnings during plan year participation. Payout, if earned, is based on company and individual performance for each plan year and may range from 0% 200% of target. Targets are subject to change in subsequent plan years. Must be employed by September 30 in order to receive any prorated payout.
