Job Summary:

Working closely with the Dean of Extension, the Dean’s leadership team, and UW-Madison’s Tribal Relations Director, the Director of Extension Tribal Relations (DETR) will lead strategic engagement opportunities, special projects and initiatives for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension with the Native Nations of Wisconsin, Wisconsin’s Tribal Colleges, and affiliated organizations.

This is a statewide position charged with creating and managing a collaborative effort to develop, manage and enhance Extension’s relationships with, and investment in, the Tribes of Wisconsin with respect to areas of mutual interest. The DETR will create and foster opportunities to strengthen relationships and facilitate communication with Tribes across the state, as well as with Wisconsin’s two 1994 Land Grant Institutions.

The DETR will supervise employees who have majority positions working directly with one or more Tribes and provide oversight for all Extension/Tribal relationships and investments. The position will provide leadership, direction, and support for all UW-Madison Division of Extension educational programming offered in collaboration with the Tribes of Wisconsin.

The office location for this role is flexible and will be determined based on position needs, successful candidate’s preferences, and availability of suitable space.

Responsibilities:

Plans and provides direction for the administrative operations of a division or business unit(s) of the institution to advance program goals and objectives.

  • 15% Directs, implements, and monitors strategic planning initiatives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources
  • 10% Recommends, reviews, and directs personnel resource allocation to ensure appropriate utilization of resources
  • 10% Supervises managerial, professional, and support staff of the unit or division and facilitates unit staff developmental opportunities
  • 15% Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit
  • 10% Develops and audits administrative operating reports, budgets, policies, and procedures to comply with regulations, institution policies, and business objectives
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 20% Cultivates relations with the 12 Tribes of Wisconsin and two 1994 Land Grant Institutions for the purpose of identifying opportunities for collaboration in service to Extension’s mission and the interests and needs of each Tribe.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Five (5) years of professional work with Native Nations or on Native Nations issues, including a demonstrated ability to work with diverse tribes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing respectful relationships and engaging in constructive problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people and/or programs.

Preferred:

  • An individual who is recognized as a partner by tribal communities of Wisconsin or will be able to quickly develop respectful relationships with the twelve American Indian Nations of Wisconsin.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with Extension program(s).
  • Familiarity with UW-Madison and higher education.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
