Energetics is seeking to hire an engineer who will bring mature technology insights related to the topic of conductivity-enhanced materials and applications for technologies ranging from the power grid to microelectronics, which rely on electrically and thermally conductive materials. The Conductive Materials Engineer will serve as a technical resource for the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO). This Engineer will support AMMTO clients in assessing the energy, economic, and decarbonization potential for emerging technologies that deploy enhanced conductivity materials at scale in a commercial marketplace. As part of your work, you’ll gain cutting-edge knowledge and contribute towards technologies, policies, and trends in electrification, thermal management and decarbonization. Join our fast-paced team at Energetics and help turn ideas into real impacts. This consultant will work in a highly collaborative atmosphere, interacting directly with government program managers. This position can be based in one of our existing offices or working remotely in the U.S.

The successful candidate will: 

  • Have a strong understanding and application of R&D project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. 
  • Have deep technical knowledge in related materials science and applications and the ability to rapidly learn new technical areas.
  • Support program objectives through task management, analysis and R&D planning, reporting, inter-team and external relations.
  • Develop summary reports to clients, documenting results from DOE-sponsored events and R&D efforts.
  • Engage across a project portfolio to understand a work effort’s objectives and suggest improvements based on outcomes.
  • Have excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills. A high degree of professionalism, curiosity, and ethical conduct.
  • Manage and serve as point of contact for external engagement with industry, academic and other project partners.
  • Be able to work from a behind a desk with regular Teams interactions with clients.

Minimum Requirements

  • Engineering degree with a minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience (3 years with a master’s or Ph.D. degree) including internships.
  • Experience with materials development, including conductivity-enhanced materials, novel alloys, and characterization and modeling of materials.
  • Familiarity with recent entrepreneurial aspects of enhanced-conductivity design.
  • Knowledgeable about heat exchangers, from large industrial to small microelectronics.
  • Interest in manufacturing, decarbonization, and/or clean energy technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong technical writing skills and an ability to tailor written and verbal communications for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Enjoy meeting new people in the field and initiating introductions.
  • A strong interest in pursuing work in the area of manufacturing and the clean energy transition.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; advanced analytical and Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel when working on self-managed tasks and as a member of a team.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

Perefrred Requirements

  • Material scientist or metallurgist with relevant materials development experience for electric and thermal applications. (experience with enhanced-conductivity materials is more relevant than material science or metallurgy degree alone).
  • Experience with complex enterprise architectures and securing complex enterprise architectures is preferred.
  • Master’s or PhD degrees in science and engineering degrees.
  • Candidates with years of experience greater than the minimum are also encouraged to apply.
  • Experience in government consulting, supporting government organizations, public-private partnerships, or stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficient in running web meeting platforms, e.g., Teams, Zoom, GoToMeeting, WebEx.
  • Technical publications in the field of materials development or conductivity-enhanced materials are a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Acting as the technical subject matter expet for enhanced-conductivity materials, synthesize and clearly communicate results of relevant research in industrial sectors to colleagues and clients through formal and informal presentations and written technical communications (reports, white papers, fact sheets, briefings, journal articles, etc.).
  • Leads small research projects and/or technical event (e.g. workshop or roundtable) planning and logistics and provides project management support for federal clients.
  • Works independently or as a member of a team; leads small teams.
  • Contributes to strategic plan of federal government technical programs (proposed or in progress) with respect to goals and objectives, implementation plans, and budget allocations.
  • Takes technical information and develops clear planning and summary documents.
  • Develops and implements performance metrics for client projects and programs.
  • Work closely with program managers and co-workers in a fast-paced collaborative team environment (diligent and responsive contributor). Advise on industry-relevant demonstration opportunities for decarbonization through electrification and improved energy efficiency through use of conductive materials including thermal and thermo-mechanical design.
  • Collects R&D project and program information; summarizes results in draft reports.
  • Analyzes global technology developments, trends, and statistics (energy, carbon, and economics).
  • Liaison between scientists at universities/laboratories and government decision-makers to assist in distilling key technical results and potential impacts from R&D.
  • Supports in person and virtual meetings with clients and stakeholders, including but not limited to preparing meeting materials, scheduling meetings, assisting the meeting facilitator, and summarizing proceedings. Also ensure all meeting attendees are aware of their assigned action items with post meeting follow ups as necessary.
  • Assists clients in the preparation of technical reports required by the agency hierarchy, by Congress, or by the Administration.
  • Assists clients in the preparation of technical materials designed to educate or inform the public.
  • Other duties as assigned.
