Job Description

Job Summary:

To better serve undergraduate students, the Department of History is seeking an Academic Advisor who will (a) provide academic advising and resources to undergraduate students who are pursuing a major or certificate in History and (b) create new initiatives aimed at engaging and supporting the success of undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds, including students of color and other historically underrepresented students (veterans, first-generation college students, students with disabilities, Pell-eligible students, etc.). The department currently serves approximately 650 declared majors and certificate students. The Academic Advisor will join the History Undergraduate Program Team and collaborate with Department of History staff and faculty to provide comprehensive and holistic student services to undergraduate students.

This person in this position will:

~ Provide student-centered academic advising services through remote and in-person appointments to assigned and exploring undergraduate students.

~ Collaborate with departmental and university partners to create programs and resources aimed at increasing students’ sense of belonging and inclusion.

~ Maintain and develop resources to aid students in the exploration and successful completion of the department’s undergraduate programs.

~ Manage course selection and enrollment of Senior Guest Auditors.

~ Stay current on University and College policies and resources related to academics and supporting student success.

In addition to home departments, advisors in L&S are a part of an active advising community and interdependent system. During the academic year, L&S advisors meet monthly as a consortium for information sharing and ongoing training. All L&S advisors also contribute to the campus Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, for a couple of weeks in summer and a few days in January, to advise new L&S first-year and transfer students.

Responsibilities:

Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

  • 10% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • 40% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • 5% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • 5% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • 10% Proactively engages students as needed
  • 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • 5% Manages course promotion for and enrollment of Senior Guest Auditor Students
  • 5% Coordinates financial administration for the Undergrad Program, under direction of the Academic Program Manager
  • 5% Service/Professional Development – Represents dept at campus initiatives or resource fairs; serves on internal and external committees; engages within the broader campus student services community; professional development
  • 5% Workplace Culture & Sustainability – Actively prepares for and engages in staff meetings; supports initiatives led by colleagues, including attendance at events, service on planning teams and sub-committees as needed, etc.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Minimum 1 year of academic advising experience
  • Experience working with general curricular elements and structures
  • Experience conducting workshops and planning events
  • Knowledge of policies related to student privacy
  • Demonstrated strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks

Preferred:

  • Experience working with undergraduate students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds
  • Experience building new programming
  • Demonstrated the ability to effectively collaborate with university partners
  • Familiarity with the discipline of History or History of Science

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $44,543 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $44,543 to $63,697 depending on qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $44,543 to $82,851. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.

Additional Information:

This position requires that most work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Academic Advisors may be eligible for up to two days a week of remote work at an offsite, non-campus location after onboarding and training are completed.
