Job Description

DAY TO DAY:

  • An employer in the Charlotte, NC area is looking for a Substation Physical Engineer IV in the Fort Mill, SC area. This electrical engineering position is in the Substation Engineering group within the Transmission & Substation division of this company. This position will work closely with clients, engineering departments, and CAD Designers in the development of High-voltage Substation Engineering Design packages for electric utility clients. Provide substation physical engineering, technical support, and supervision to a Transmission Substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations. This role includes both direct billable client work (project work) and project management support for projects. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline work for projects, perform responsible charge engineering duties, and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development, project cost estimating as well as supporting business development efforts. Under minimum supervision in the area of power delivery and grid analysis, the incumbent will provide:
  • Engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems
  • Effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities
  • Thorough, timely, and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches
  • Support the company’s goals and represent the company positively and professionally
  • Interact with customer’s internal engineers and technical personnel on a day-to-day basis
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with customers
  • Monitor deliverables, schedules, and present solutions to the client
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management
  • Influences decisions of moderate nature requiring high degree of tact

MUST:

  • BS in Engineering
  • Experience working with protection and controls of substation equipment (circuit breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, bus, etc.)
  • Ability to design the layout of the substation equipment (circuit breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, bus, etc.)
  • Ability to design the cable trench and conduit for the routing of cables to the substation equipment.
  • Ability to complete the bill of material required for construction of the substation.
  • Ability to ensure that a complete design package (drawings, bill of materials, conduit lists, construction specifications, etc.) are delivered to the customer within budget and on time.
  • Working knowledge of NESC and IEEE
  • Working knowledge and ability to perform various substation engineering calculations. Examples include:
  • Grounding studies.
  • Bus calculations.
  • Lightning protection studies.
  • Substation lighting / illumination studies.

PLUS:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • NCEES and ability to become licensed in multiple states preferred.
  • Experience working for Georgia Power, Duke Energy or Southern Company
