General Summary

GTI Energy, the nations leading research, development, deployment, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for a Senior Engineer in our Zero Emission Systems Team. This unit performs research, development, and demonstrations focused on technology and information aimed at greenhouse gas emission quantification, mitigation, environmental impacts, energy infrastructure integrity, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, procedural review, renewable energy, hydrogen adoption, technology validation and integration. The qualified candidate will act as a Senior Engineer and will lead research efforts surrounding infrastructure for low-carbon fuels – such as natural gas, hydrogen, bioenergy, and renewable natural gas (RNG). The individual will manage research projects as well as support cross-cutting research efforts and interface with project sponsors, researchers and subcontractors.

Work Location

The position is based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday. The candidate may also be able to work remotely under GTI Energy Remote Work policy and pursuant to approval by the Vice President of the business unit.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Ability to effectively participate and efficiently communicate complex technical challenges and perform applied research. Strong experience and technical background in core research areas is essential.
  • Provide technical analysis and solutions to safely deploy net-zero strategies, hydrogen and low-carbon fuels into the existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure
  • Offer strong experience and technical background in core areas such as natural gas pipeline systems, equipment, materials, storage and delivery methods, and operating practices is essential.
  • Assist with generation of proposals for future projects within the Business Unit
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge of the energy value chain: production, storage, transmission, delivery, and utilization
  • Understanding of gaseous transmission pipeline infrastructure and systems operations
  • Experience with the design and management of technology field demonstrations and pilots
  • Knowledgeable of energy industry regulations, safety procedures, operating best practices, and related codes & standards
  • Ability to translate technical information into a format that is understandable and valuable to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Results and detailed oriented
  • Self-directed, self-motivated, adaptive, and comfortable in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including writing and delivering technical proposals, reports, and presentations
Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor of Science in an engineering or scientific field with a minimum of 7 years of R&D and/or consulting/engineering experience in the energy industry; advanced degree in an engineering or scientific field with 5 years of experience.
  • Prior work experience in the utility industry is desired
  • Experimental and field research experience is a plus
  • Experience with program/project management and multi-discipline collaborative experience preferred
Pay Transparency

The salary range for this position is $95,000 – $130,000 USD annually. This salary range is GTI Energys good faith estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, GTI Energys business or organizational needs and an individuals relevant experience, education, qualifications, certifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, and/or performance. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus. The range listed is just one component of GTI Energys total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, paid time off, and region-specific benefits.
