General Summary

GTI Energy, the nations leading research, development, and training organization serving energy markets, is seeking an Associate Data Scientist to join our Digital Innovation team. The qualified candidate will enhance our capabilities in statistics and data science by strengthening and supporting enterprise-wide strategic initiatives. In this role, the Associate Data Scientist will support the execution of on-going projects and initiatives, including scientific research around development of low or no-carbon energy systems through data-driven modeling and statistical analysis.

Work Location

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday. This position is expected to be on-site; however, fully remote work will be considered based on experience.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform exploratory data analyses and statistical modeling to answer research questions and develop tools to support data-driven decision making
  • Scrape and wrangle data from open-source repositories that can be used to support statistical simulations for sample planning, model development, and other data analytics initiatives
  • Create data visualizations and dashboards to communicate insights and findings to stakeholders
  • Develop presentations and written reports to communicate findings
  • Develop unique approaches to investigating key research questions, including leading programs related to methane emissions mitigation, digitalization in energy, and net zero systems
  • Support ongoing research efforts using a disciplined approach and standard best practices
  • Participate in 1-on-1 and team meetings and contribute to team projects
  • Participate in GTI Strategy & Innovation team building and networking events
  • Contribute to proposal development for data science projects
  • Meet deadlines and deliverables on projects and manage and track time spent on project work
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement fundamental statistical analyses and concepts such as t-tests, linear regression, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in R, Python, or similar software with the ability to wrangle, process, and analyze data
  • Familiarity with experimental design and analysis approaches such as randomization, blocking, or mixed models
  • Ability to create compelling data visualizations in R and/or Python (e.g. ggplot2, Matplotlib, Seaborn)
  • Familiarity with advanced statistical methods such as Bayesian analysis, time-series or spatial analyses, survey statistics, or other approaches
  • Willingness to learn new analytical techniques and data science methods
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Strong written and oral communication, including the ability to translate technical information into a format that is understandable and valuable to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work collaboratively on teams with both technical and non-technical members
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with excellent attention to detail
Required Education and Experience
  • Completed a Bachelors degree program with 3 or more years experience or an advanced degree (Masters or greater) in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience using programming software such as R, Python, or similar to execute data wrangling, visualization, and analyses
  • Demonstrated experience communicating technical statistical/analytical concepts to non-technical audiences
Desired Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • General knowledge of the energy industry, particularly related to the natural gas supply chain (including emissions management), methane emissions, hydrogen, greenhouse gases, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience using data science techniques to develop software and data analytics tools for customers
  • GIS experience
  • Familiarity with modern analytical approaches such as machine learning and neural network approaches (e.g., classification techniques, tree-based methods, KNN, cluster analysis)
  • Policy and regulation knowledge related to energy
