Contract English Teacher (1099)


Contract English Teacher:
Connecticut State Department of Education Certification required: Teacher of English to Non-English Speaking Adults #088

Program Mission: A community-based program that utilizes the services of trained volunteers to provide free, high-quality education to adults for the purpose of enabling them to acquire the skills necessary to achieve personal and occupational goals. Access to education remains essential to furthering community-wide aspirations of strengthening families, encouraging civic engagement, enabling parents to participate in the education of their children and increasing access to opportunities for economic and social advancement.

Description:

Contractor will provide 2 hours of instruction twice a week (4 hours of instruction total) to high-level adult English learners. Instruction may be remote synchronous with a few in-person sessions including orientation in Stamford, CT. Work contract is set from September June and may be renewable annually.

Students enrolled are looking to improve their English language proficiency and workforce readiness skills through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and digital literacy activities. Core class text and curriculum framework provided by Literacy Volunteers program.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan for and implement English language classes 2x a week
  • Implement instructional units including resume and cover letter preparation, job application process, content related to civic engagement and community resources
  • Prepare students accordingly for mock interviews
  • Facilitate and oversee student projects that employ the use of technology
  • Attend course-related workshops, program events, and trainings, as available
  • Collaborate with computer digital skills staff to ensure curriculum coordination, alignment with grant objectives, and student progress
  • Collaborate on lesson plans with staff Program Manager and staff Education Coordinator
  • Communicate (as needed) with LVFC staff: student attendance, achievements, tech/device needs, and referrals for services as needed
  • Utilize systems established for attendance and tutor notes, participate in grant reporting surveys, and engage in occasional professional planning sessions
  • Respond to and/or appropriately direct tutor/student inquiries
  • Maintain consistent contact with students and tutors via, phone, email, texting app, mailings, and office visits
  • Submit monthly invoices to Program Manager for payment


Performance Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with adult students, teaching colleagues and program staff
  • Ability to promote positive relationships between students including opportunities for small

group and partner work

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and concern for the welfare and progress of program

participants

  • Knowledge of and/or research of further educational opportunities and community resources appropriate for adult students


Qualifications:

  • College Degree and Connecticut State Department of Education Certification required: Non-English Speaking Adults #088
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Competency with Word, PowerPoint, Google Drive/Apps, Zoom preferred or willing to learn
  • Must be sensitive to culture, race, sexual orientation, age, gender, etc.
  • Must be sensitive to immigration and citizenship status
  • Must be trustworthy and able to uphold strict confidentiality policies
