Emerging Technology, Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization

In this role within Eversource’s Energy Efficiency department, you will provide technology assessment and techno-economic analysis of new equipment and services capable of reducing residential and commercial customer energy use and Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders including implementation contractors, internal teammates, and regulatory agencies to advance the development of Eversource’s nation-leading energy efficiency and decarbonization programs.

This is a hybrid role. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Creates equipment performance and financial models to highlight economic impacts for both customers and utility side system planning, revenue requirements and support rate case analysis. Understands levelized cost of electricity models and adapts models to levelized cost of thermal energy for buildings. Conducts sensitivity analysis to highlight impact of input variables on costs as part of the techno-economic evaluation of technologies.
  • Displays a broad range of industry knowledge and is a subject matter expert for new technologies that reduce energy use support the decarbonization of our customer’s buildings. Expertise with key technologies to support building electrification, such as heat pumps, VRF, DOAS, etc.
  • Coordinates with senior management, program implementation teams, program administrators, state and government agencies and third-party stakeholders to bring new technology into the programs.
  • Makes recommendations on whether new technologies should be included in Energy Efficiency (EE)/decarbonization program offerings.
  • As appropriate, designs and carries out field demonstrations totest new technology.
  • Assists with the production of material for regulatory filings for the energy efficiency programs and other areas of the Company as requested.
  • Represents Eversource in national energy efficiency conferences and/or stakeholder events (e.g. ACEEE, ASHRAE, ACI, CEE and EPRI). Authors technical papers and presentations for national publications and events.
  • Tracks Department of Energy (DOE) initiatives related to EE and decarbonization and provides technical input.
  • Identifies opportunities to apply for grant funding to support research or demonstration projects, coordinates the application process, and serves as main technical contact for selected grants over the award period.
  • Contribute to the development of training programs for municipal employees and building industry stakeholders on new building codes and standards.
  • Participate in statewide committees responsible for new technology assessment including the Massachusetts Technology Assessment Committee (MTAC) and Connecticut’s Policy Working Group (PWG).

Qualifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill: 

  • Requires solid engineering background, knowledge of building science and application of thermodynamic principles.
  • Requires investment analysis skills including creating Internal Rate of Return (IRR) models and performing sensitivity analysis.
  • Requires solid working understanding of energy rates and customer economics.
  • Requires ability to interpret energy efficiency technologies and services and understand their application(s)

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Master’s degree in engineering and/or Business Administration preferred.

Experience:   

  • Five (5) plus years of relevant experience in engineering of residential and commercial building equipment along with relevant experience with energy efficiency and/or decarbonization programs.

Licenses & Certifications: 

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), PE, BPI, or HERs are preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Eversource offers a competitive total rewards program. The annual salary range for this position is $114,000 – $126,000 plus incentive. Salary is commensurate with your experience. Check out the career site for an overview of benefits.
