DEFINITION

Dane County owns and operates the Countys landfills, household hazardous waste collection site (Clean Sweep), a construction and demolition recycling facility, various other recycling programs, and a Renewable Natural Gas production and offload facility. This classification provides customer and administrative support and receives, sorts, and packages household hazardous waste and electronics at the Dane County Clean Sweep facility. This classification also performs or assists with administrative and manual work in maintenance or construction and repair at the landfill, Clean Sweep, construction and demolition recycling facility, RNG plant or other offsite locations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs the designated tasks assigned by the supervisor to efficiently and safely operate the Household Hazardous Waste Facility (Clean Sweep) on a daily basis. Accepts, sorts, and packages household hazardous waste and electronics that have been delivered to the Dane County Clean Sweep facility. Assists customers with and processes transactions for payment for waste disposal services. Provides education about Clean Sweep and Landfill services and household hazardous waste and electronics recycling to members of the public. Assists in providing training and direction to seasonal/temporary employees. Assists with site cleaning, maintenance, litter pickup, recordkeeping, program development and outreach, and other special projects and events. Performs or assists with manual work in maintenance and repair at the landfill, clean sweep, construction and demolition recycling facility, biogas plant or other offsite locations. Duties include mowing, snow removal, picking up trash and litter, cleaning work areas, performing load inspections, directing traffic, and other duties as assigned.Serves as scale attendant or helps with customers at the scale and provides information to the public.

Education, Experience & Special Requirements

Education, Training and Experience:

Must have high school diploma or equivalent. Must have any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to one (1) year in solid waste or hazardous waste management, laboratory and/or other chemical handling, chemistry, microbiology, biology, and/or bacteriology.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid driver’s license. A safe driving record is required. Must be available to work weekends and some nights, holidays, and during emergencies or unexpected maintenance events. Must be able to be on-call for night and weekend work.

Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the jobs responsibilities. Wisconsins Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the positions responsibilities are substantially related to the applicants criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.) Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.

For Bilingual Positions:

  • Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.).
  • Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job.

*If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/ examinations they currently hold qualify them for the positions bilingual designation.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

Ability to lift 70 pounds maximum with frequent lifting (up to 50 times a day) and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Ability to move 500 pound drum with drum cart or 800 pound cubic yard box with pallet jack. Must be available to work weekends and during emergencies or special events. Ability to wear a respirator. Ability to enter and work in small confined spaces. Physically capable of running light equipment; operating hand tools and power tools; climbing ladders; working from heights; working with poor lighting; and working in conditions of wind, dust, rain, snow, ice, extreme temperatures, and excessive noise. Majority of work is performed indoors, with minimal exposure to heat/cold. Minimal exposure to mild odors while handling paint and chemicals.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of principles and practices of good customer relations. Ability to handle cash and credit card transactions. Ability to learn, understand, and explain procedures, laws, rules and regulations. Working knowledge of chemistry and environmental health concerns, practices and procedures. Working knowledge of basic safety procedures when working with chemicals. Ability to locate and repair minor operational equipment deficiencies. Ability to be mobile over a variety of steps, ramps, ladders and confined spaces. Possess sufficient physical strength and agility to perform regular lifting and moving of materials, supplies, and equipment. Capability of exerting pulling force upon machinery, equipment and valves. Ability to reach overhead and bend over to operate levers and valves. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, fellow employees and supervisors. Ability to use computer spread sheet and word processing programs. Ability to read and interpret labels and material safety data sheets. Ability to perform mathematical calculations and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to attend required safety training and to wear required personal protective equipment. Ability to learn federal, state and local laws, regulations, practices, and procedures related to solid and hazardous waste management. Ability to follow safety procedures, Health and Safety Plans, and Contingency Plans. Ability to operate a forklift and other facility equipment. Ability to maintain, operate, and use all types of ground maintenance and snow removal equipment and tools; ability to repair and maintain facilities and equipment; ability to work from oral or written instructions, ability to adhere to safety rules; knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques, materials and supplies; ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, accept constructive criticism and be able to project a positive image of the facility to guests.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $29.93 – $31.99 per hour
