Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The SPARC Tokamak Instrumentation & Control Team seeks a mechanical engineer capable of designing, analyzing, prototyping, and integrating mechanical systems that instrument superconducting magnets in ultra-high vacuum, cryogenic temperatures, high magnetic field, and neutron radiation. These mechanical systems are primarily composed of sensors, sensor mounts, harnesses, electrical junctions, connectors, and feedthroughs. This role will be responsible for design, validation, and delivery of these systems.

This team member will:

  • Design of the instrumentation for SPARC tokamak systems by production of the required design deliverables according to the SPARC design process
  • Collaborate with the lead engineers for tokamak structural, thermal, and magnetic systems and other key stakeholders to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the design and implemented according to requirements
  • Coordinate and oversee implementation, testing, installation, and commissioning of the I&C systems according to the project schedule
  • Manage suppliers of components and integrated subsystems of the I&C systems
  • Produce engineering deliverables such as instrument lists, signal lists, loop diagrams, data sheets and cabling schedules
  • Produce testing, installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance procedures for the I&C systems
  • Ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements
  • Maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field
  • 2+ years of mechanical engineering experience
  • Manufacturing, machining, tooling (design for manufacture)

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • 2+ years of mechanical analysis experience
  • 2+ years of mechanical integration experience
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience
  • 2+ years of mechanical design experience
  • Mechanical CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, or similar)
  • GD&T
  • Familiarity with harsh environments (vacuum, high pressure, low temperature, high magnetic field, radiation)
  • FEM analysis tools (e.g. ANSYS. COMSOL)
  • Mechanical system prototyping experience (quick-turn solutions to check fit and function)
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Extended activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting, etc.
  • Regular travel or required nights/weekends/on-call
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
