Our goal is to deploy thousands of fusion power plants (ARCs) around the world. We need a highly motivated and experienced Industrial Safety Engineer to help deliver our first fusion device, SPARC. After SPARC is proven we move forward to multiple iterations of ARC technology for rapid deployment.
We are seeking a Industrial Safety Engineer to join our Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) team. Reporting directly to the Director of Project Safety, this role will be the SPARC Projects safety expert and will serve as a leader to ensure the safe construction, assembly, commissioning and operation of novel systems and applications throughout the fusion power plant. These systems and applications are found in the tokamak, primary & secondary support systems to the tokamak, and operations applications throughout the power plant as we lead ambitious endeavors aimed at developing cutting-edge fusion power technology.
Examples of the unique and novel power systems we are currently engineering include:
- A Cryogenic System (CRYO) removes heat from the tokamak to keep the superconducting magnets operating down to 8Kelvin (-445F). CRYO consists of a distribution system with multiple tanks and vacuum-jacketed lines interfacing with the fusion reactor to supply cold helium and return warm to the cryoplant. The cryoplant is a 4 MW helium Brayton cycle plant that rejects the heat to the liquid nitrogen (LN2) and cooling water systems.
- A Radio Frequency Heating System (RFHT) serves as the heat source to bring the plasma up to and sustain operating temperatures, utilizing Ion Cyclotron Resonant Heating. The system is built up of a series of transmitters that convert electrical power to Radio Frequency power, a transmission system, and ultimately an antenna system to send the signals into the tokamak.
- A pulsed power system responsible for driving the SPARC tokamak magnet system loads and providing dynamic control of plasma. It consists of a 700 MVA, 22 kV synchronous machine source, kinetic energy storage and approximately 1000 MVA of installed power conversion equipment serving 20+ individually controlled loads.
The ideal candidate for this role will have significant experience with occupational safety and health in industrial plants, power generation facilities, utilities, or large scientific facilities such as particle accelerators or fusion devices. Successful candidates will demonstrate sufficient technical knowledge to understand detailed designs across a range of traditional power plant systems as well as unique and novel systems associated with a first of its kind fusion device. This individual will be comfortable spending the majority of working hours in the plant envelope.
The selected candidate will be highly organized, solutions focused and an excellent communicator. They will routinely interface with contractors, engineers, operations, maintenance, and Visitors. They must have the communication skills needed to articulate and defend CFS programs and procedures.
This role is onsite at our Devens MA campus. This is not a hybrid or remote role. This role may include on-call responsibilities which would require the ability to be onsite within one hour.
- Demonstrate expertise with the safety programs, procedures, PPE and response actions for a comprehensive range of power plant activities
- Be responsible for supporting activities with CFS Teams, vendors and contractors on a challenging and active construction project
- Conduct frequent project walks focused on safe work practices including coaching conversations with workers when corrections are required
- Participate in daily tailboard meetings or project kick off meetings to represent EHS perspective and specific expectations
- Participate in and contribute to project planning to address hazards from multiple work crews in one area (SIMOPS)
- Review for high hazard work prior to execution to include critical lifts, confined space entries, high voltage work, hot work, pressure testing, fall protection plans, etc.
- Review Pre-Work Risk Assessments and Pre-Task Plans to ensure tasks, hazards and mitigations are in alignment with EHS program requirements
- Participate in constructibility and design reviews to provide guidance, assistance and direction regarding defined EHS program requirements
- Lead and document accident/incident investigations to determine root cause, prevention and corrective measures
- Perform frequent safety and environmental inspections/audits in the field and have the skills, knowledge and ability to take immediate corrective action if required. Support the presentation of findings and relevant information to the SPARC leadership team and contractors as needed

- As directed by the Director of Project Safety, conduct or facilitate required and recommended safety training sessions
- As directed by the Director of Project Safety, collect data and identify trends for safety metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to demonstrate effective use of safety resources, high utilization factors and effective safe operations among participants. Create and give reports on the effectiveness of safety programs
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Project Safety
- Bachelors Degree in Environmental, Health and Safety or a related technical field or equivalent experience in related fields as follows; about 5 years of related experience with a degree; or at least 10 years of related experience in a high-risk industry, preferably power or process plant projects, refining or petrochemical plant projects, or a similar industry
- 10+ years experience in the implementation of Environmental Health and Safety regulatory compliance programs with a focus on supporting major capital project planning and construction
- Expert level knowledge and experience with regulatory requirements applicable to Working at Heights, Electrical Safety, Confined Space Safety, Construction Contractor Management and incident response & investigation
- Experience participating in a diverse group of professionals, partnering on issues effectively across all levels, and collaborating with staff on institutional and diverse projects and programs
- Significant experience in technical environments with electro-mechanical systems, power plants, advanced software and utility equipment concepts
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong facilitation skills and ability to work from a position of credible influence based on technical knowledge versus a position of direct authority
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Perform activities such as standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders and entry to limited access spaces in a industrial plant envelope the majority of each day
- Professional certification such as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), General Safety Practitioner (GSP) or other related certification preferred.
- Extensive experience working either in a fusion test reactor or particle accelerator
- Extensive experience working either in a power generation plant or similar capacity related to a grid-connected power utility
- Working knowledge and competence of Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) or Human Performance Improvement concepts and practices
- Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
