ClimeCo is seeking a full-time Senior Manager, Energy Management and Innovations (Renewables), for our Project Development team. This position will be remote within the United States or Canada, with a preference for Denver, Calgary, New York City, or San Francisco and a potential for hybrid work in the future.

Position Description

The main objective of the role is to support ClimeCo in leading renewable energy procurement and strategy work. Therefore, the role will encompass a wide variety of tasks related to renewables, including evaluating low carbon power or fuel options, using financial and risk modeling tools as well as existing knowledge of electricity markets and regulations to inform strategic decision making, and negotiating power purchase agreements (PPA’s) and virtual power purchase agreements (VPPA’s). Helping clients decarbonize is foundational to ClimeCo’s business, and renewable energy plays a large role. The ideal candidate for this position will have skills and experience in both the technical and commercial aspects of renewables project development and execution.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate and negotiate power purchase agreements (PPAs) and virtual power purchase agreements (VPPA’s). Understand market dynamics and regulatory requirements. Depending on the opportunity, support both the renewable project developers and the corporate offtakers/ buyers.
  • Utilize financial models to project power prices, assess investment viability, and optimize project economics.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with project development, including technical, financial, and regulatory risks.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external clients and partners, and governing bodies to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Support business development activities by responding to incoming client leads, conducting business development meetings, developing proposals, closing deals, and growing existing client relationships.
  • Develop and maintain expertise on voluntary and compliance carbon and electricity markets including market dynamics, quality, credibility, methodologies, standards, trends, etc.
  • Develop strategies to reduce Scope 2 emissions through renewable energy solutions for our clients including site and regional specific analysis (US and Global).
  • Work with the broader ClimeCo team to evaluate pathways for clients to reach their decarbonization goals, including, but not limited to: PPA’s/VPPA’s, behind the meter solutions and project development, REC’s, VCM, compliance markets, Article 6, green premiums, insetting, and other innovative commercial structures. This may involve evaluating product carbon intensity and impacts, understanding supply chains, and assessing customer objectives and willingness to pay.
  • Conduct client meetings, managing internal and external communications, and ensuring high quality and on-time deliverables for projects.
  • Support writing for external audiences and/or speaking engagements related to corporate decarbonization utilizing renewable power and/or fuels.
  • Contribute to a team culture driven by collaboration, intellectual curiosity, accountability, and empathy.
  • Prepare progress reports, feasibility studies, and other required documents for internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum BA/BS in business, economics, engineering, environmental studies, or related field. An advanced degree in business, sustainability, or related field is an asset
  • Minimum of 7 years of related experience in corporate renewable energy strategy, renewables project development, and/or energy procurement, including negotiating PPA’s/VPPA’s in US market
  • Experience with a variety of financial and risk modeling tools
  • Direct experience with environmental commodity programs and/or markets (e.g., carbon offsets, renewable energy certificates, low carbon fuels, etc.). Familiarity with accepted GHG accounting standards.
  • Excellent attention to detail and presentation skills, including material development (PowerPoint) and delivery
  • Ability to understand complex policy environments and their commercial impacts
  • Strong client management skills, including long-term relationship building and contract negotiation with multiple parties
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Rigorous planner and proactive communicator, comfortable supporting multiple projects simultaneously and balancing shifting priorities
  • Critical thinking and fast learning, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative problems, spreadsheets, approximations, and assumptions
  • Empathetic team player, excited to contribute to an inclusive company culture
  • Willing to travel on occasion (about 5 % of the time)

The starting salary for a well-qualified Senior Manager is $90,000 – $100,000 USD annually base salary and performance-based bonus, considering individual work experience and work location.
