General Description and Classification Standards

The City of Atlanta Department of Aviation (DOA) is seeking a highly skilled Sustainability Engineer to join our dynamic Sustainability team. The successful candidate will provide sustainability engineering direction, inter-disciplinary coordination and leadership to the Planning and Development design staff in execution of Department of Aviation design projects. Provide support to the Capital Improvement Program through design reviews and coordination on related projects. Explore innovative sustainability solutions for application at the Airport to help reach net zero goals.

This position reports to the Director of Sustainability. This position manages and organizes resources to accomplish specific sustainability task assignments in the areas of project and facility management, design and design management, and construction management. This is a highly experienced professional who routinely exercises project leadership over complex projects, trains other professionals, or serves as a specialized subject matter expert in one or more specific areas. This level would be expected to have noticeably greater leadership or technical responsibilities than the Senior level.

Supervision Received

Works independently and only sees a supervisor occasionally for administrative supervision on assignments given in terms of broad general objectives, limits and organizational priorities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned. Responsibilities include:

  • Reviews construction documents and related design tasks prepared by others for compliance with sustainability standards, including on-call consultants, tenants and local jurisdictions adjacent to the airport
  • Develops scopes and budgets for inclusion of sustainability in-house work
  • Provides input and direction for the development or revision of Airfield and General Civil design sustainability standards
  • Contributes to achievement of LEED, Envision, ParkSmart and other green certifications for Airport projects
  • Coordinates with Contracts staff and Department of Procurement officials in preparation of bidding documents
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainability insights and recommendations
  • Conducts research on best practices, emerging trends, and regulatory requirements in sustainability
  • Measures the economic and emission-reducing impacts of sustainability measures such as energy efficiency
  • Tracks sustainability metrics and data such as energy use
  • Conducts life cycle assessments for construction and other airport operations
  • Contributes to publication of ESG report and maintenance of Airports Carbon Accreditation
  • Researches innovative aviation technologies such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel for feasibility and impact of implementation at the Airport
  • Participates in strategy development and revision for Sustainability team
  • Provides coaching and mentoring when needed

Direction received is very general and focuses on end results and is typically collaborative in nature. Position plans own work and project schedules and sequences.

None. May oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to quickly come up to speed on new technologies
  • Skilled in operating a basic computer and software
  • Good organizational and management skills
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in the handling of emergency situations
  • Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documentation in a concise, clear and effective manner
